To clarify: This is the first time I’ve used a ‘real’ camera (Canon DSLR, old Rebel of some description) to shoot artistic photos of a car. Or try. I photograph cars every day as part of my job, but that’s all stick-to-the-script brightly-lit show-off-features-regardless-of-artistic-merit corporate BS. Enjoy the decent Civic.

If you squint really hard you can see the new sway bars.
Just fore of the rear wheel you can see the impact points of a biker who decided my car looked like a comfortable place to plant his brand-new Kawasaki.
The interior shots kinda suck. I had a flash with a diffuser but it wasn’t wanting to work for me and I was far too lazy to figure it out. Blatant Dr Pepper product placement is obvious. Yes, I used Lightroom.

Great shots! Appreciate seeing others’ pictures that are just starting out as well.

Best shots of a decent civic. Ever.
I’ll be sure to outdo you soon enough.

Wait, so do you still have the Murdersofa?

Looks good, for $500 you got a car that’s worth at least $1500.
honda parts are cheap, you may be interested in a set of GSR swirlies or a front lip.

For a second I thought this was a roof rack.

Nice shots! Glad to see there are other people learning to take pictures like me as well. Do you have a flickr?
Did you try bouncing the flash off another surface rather than pointing it at the car?

No flickr. I have an instagram, but... that’s instagram. I use that for following local car guys to see their builds. I need to get an instagram, though. I also need to buy a cheap starter DSLR and glass.
I did try bouncing the flash off my hand, but that just cast a bunch of shadows, lol.

I keep a flash on the roof of my car.
You know, for emergencies.
Photography emergencies.

Never heard of GSR swirlies before but I like what I see. I’d really like to get 16” wheels of some description, either those or Si wheels.
I’m going to go to Lowes and get some garage door trim and make a front lip like this:
Not sure if I’ll leave it black or paint it and my side skirts white. Kind of ricey, methinks, but a white border around the bottom of the car could be kinda cool.

It’s around. Somewhere. I think.

I dare you, and also look forward to it.

You already know what I can do.
Didn’t use any staged lighting, but..

Nice. What camera and lens were you looking into?
![]() 09/28/2015 at 22:53 |

No clue. Probably a five year old Canon. I don’t need much over 5 megapixels, and I’ll probably get a 75-300mm lens or thereabouts. I haven’t looked into it much.

I really recommend doing the garage door lip! I did it with my car except with pavement edging . And I think it looks really good! Especially for so cheap

Careful now. Its a slippery slope this car/motorsport photography. One day your just playing with a camera and lens that you’ve borrowed, next your working out if its worth selling a leg in order to buy a Canon 1DX and all the L Series Glass under the sun.
the half shot with the light looks awesome btw.

Look for a Canon 40D or 50D, the price will be pretty low. Then look for a 75-300mm, a 50mm f1.8, ($100), and a new EF-S 24mm f2.8 ($150). That would be a great starter set up and should be under $500.

This is what I’ve been using

Right now we’re using a 1000d, and I actually quite like it. $160 on eBay will get me one with some crappy glass but would be good enough to learn on for now, methinks

You’re definitely right about it being good enough to learn on. The 40D/50D would be a solid upgrade from there later on too.
I’d still recommend the 50mm f1.8 and the EF-S 24mm f.28. Both really good lenses, especially for the price.

I HATE that the metal holding up the dash rusts so easily. didn’t paint mine when I had the dash out, and I think about it sometimes.

To say my car could use an interior detail is an amazing understatement

my 8 year old helps by spraying the armor all, I wipe it down. to say her spraying is generous is an amazing understatement. It’s both shiny any slippery in my car :D
but not a bit dusty :D

I dunno what it’s worth but this is the lens I used for those pictures
Thanks, phone. Efs 18-135mm

If that’s the EF-S 18-135mm STM lens its another really good bang for buck lens. It’s not the most useful lens for longs distance stuff though.
