For some reason, and I’m not sure why, but I’ve been thinking of the BMW 8-series for the past couple of days.
I don’t know why or how I started thinking about it, but having thinking about it, several things came to mind
1: This is one of the last good looking cars (IMO) to ever come out of BMW.
2: I would like to drive one at some point in my life to see what it’s like.
3: This is probably the closet thing to a genuine Grand Tourer/Personal Luxury Coupe we ever got that had a propeller on the hood
4: As much as I like it, this is one car I would never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, EVER, want to own unless I had a budget that would outstrip the GDP of Azerbaijan. I own a Northstar Cadillac, I don’t need another 90s luxury ticking time bomb that will drain me of money and vital fluids.
And that’s really all I’ve got.

The CSI came with a manual transmission and more power over the regular 850’s V12. You can (maybe) justify it by the fact that it’s close to reachigg collector car status.. Maybe..

I was fortunate enough to get to drive a friend’s mom’s (yes, his mom’s) 850 a couple of times, once over 100 miles. Drive as good as they look.

I’m not a big BMW fan, but still want one.
The average cost of maintenance in one year is around $4,000. Which frightens me.

Jesus Christ, 4 grand in repairs?! That also leads me to another question, how much of that is in the aging electric systems that are harder to fix?

Trouble with the CSi models are that they’re incredibly rare, so even if you could justify it, they'll be approaching nearly six figures in a couple of years.

Yep, beautiful cars that are presumably great to drive but there is no way I’d be able to afford the upkeep on one either.

They’re beautiful, don’t drive like anything special (except the CSi), and are a pain in the ass to work on. Still, BMW coupe + V12 + pop-up lights=win. The CSi is the car the 850 always should have been. 375hp instead of 300, and better suspension, seats, and brakes. Still, an E39 M5 will blow its doors off for less.

It’s been on my mind for the last 14 months and will be for the next year while I’m saving up for one. You’ve made a good/bad choice.
