I got to shoot this absolutley gorgeous 1966 Mercedes 230SL. I’ve always wanted to experience these graceful 2-seaters. After the shoot, the owner invited me to join his family for dinner along with a few other classic MB owners. Car people really are the best people. Can’t wait to have this video ready!
I must have one. Too bad these are properly expensive now :(

Interesting how they advertise that it’s an automatic right on the back.

Seems odd today but that was a big deal in 1966 for a 2-seater. Not very many small roadsters had auto-transmissions back then.

How does your publication find these cars? Are they offered up? Are owners reimbursed at all? Do they ask people to contact them or do they find the people at car shows & such and offer to feature their car in exchange?
I would have issues with a younger journalist (no offense) driving my classic car. But the allure of seeing a write up & professional photos on a publication might sway me a bit.
Good thing I drive shit boxes no one else wants to drive.

I find almost of all the classics we shoot. I contact people through forums, car meets and owners clubs. And unless the owner offers, I don’t actually drive them . Most of the owners are just excited to have their car featured in the paper and don’t need money for their time. They’re very generous to lend their time and cars for these shoots. I’m just happy to be a passenger in these awesome cars. I get to experience 80% of the thrill of driving one with 0% of the risk of damaging a valuable classic. I’ve turned down quite a few chances to drive exotica purely because the risk of damaging a six-figure car is way too scary for me.

That was common in places (most of the world) where an automatic box is an exotic and expensive option that you might want to show off.
