I’m not one that thought they would be complaining about cup holders but come on Subaru! If you have anything in this cup holder larger than a 12oz can you have to do this extremely awkward elbow up wrist down sort of motion to get over your cup or have it resting on top of the mug that still doesn’t work out well. And don’t even get me started on anything with a straw in this spot or the other cup holder in this car. To keep this semi-exciting and interactive, what cup holders do you abhor? Yes, it’s a slow day at work.

holy shit!! every time my wife is in my car she puts her water bottle there and every time I have to ask her to move it. Last time she said its a cup holder so it can be there, and I replied with feel free to put a cup there, thats a water bottle so get lost.

See those cupholders? They’re underneath the the console arm rest, and you slide it back to access them. You got a drink, there goes your arm rest...until you forget and rest your elbow on your drink. Only thing I dislike about my RX-8 cockpit layout.

My dad hates the location of his cup holder. The shift knob is so big that when he goes for his coffee, he used to hit the shift knob and spill coffee everywhere.

The BRZ isn’t much better as you almost have to be a contortionist to reach back to pick up your cup

My Mazda is the same way. I avoid putting things with straws in the cup holders.

4th gen Camaro. That's it right behind the ash tray right behind the shifter. It's terribly placed AND it's just a terrible cup holder.

Last-gen Dodge Caravan. Useless, the lot of them.
The ones that folded out (out of the dash just below the HVAC controls, out of the seats in the second row) were flimsy lumps of plastic that would break at the drop of a feather, the adjuster would work once. Then it would jam, you’d spill your drink on it and that would stick it together for good.
The rear seat cupholders were too wide for anything smaller than a bubba mug and too shallow for anything taller than a tuna can.

On rare occasions I have a tall object in the cup holder of my car, I usually just shift from the side of the shifter, with my hand sorta turned backwards. Kind of hard to explain, I just keep my arm inside the confines of the beverage container.

I don’t even have a cup holder to complain about.

My car doesn’t even have a cup holder. It has a small, square storage bin in the center console that holds small bottles upright but that’s about it. Oh, and it is positioned similarly behind the shifter.

Yes!!!! Absolute pain in the butt! Plus the design carried over into the 5th gen. Do forget the flimsy flip out one on the right side of the console at the base of the radio

I hate the cup holders in my BMW 135is. Not my car, but representative picture:
They are:
Small
Bad at adapting to different beverage sizes. Does not pass the Pure Leaf Tea test.
The rear one is covered by the armrest so the only way to use it is to flip up the armrest, which means no armrest available on which to my arm, and instead it just gets in the way of reaching into the back seat. (The only time I use both cup holders is on road trips with my gf who insists on bringing a bag o’ random crap in the car with her and putting it on the back seat, but then she gets all mad that the flipped-up armrest is in her way when she wants to reach the bag o’ random crap.”
Pure Leaf Tea has square bottles like this:

My C30 is very similar. Ill try amd get a pic.
Any sort of cup means you can use the gear knob or armrest. Oh and its two tiered which makes its even worse

Good cup holder design:
It will hold anything but a big gulp. It even holds cups with handles. It does not get in your way of shifting or resting your arm. You can still reach under it to change the radio station. The HVAC will heat your drink in winter and cool it in the summer. It goes away when not in use.

I usually toss resealable bottles in the passenger seat or in between the driver seat and the door. I don’t trust these coffee mugs though so it goes in the holder

I’m convinced that the previous owner spilled something from this “cup holder” and now it’s tough to get it to push to unlock. It’s now more of a punch to unlock and some of the HVAC controls are mildly sticky

My tbird had this in the arm rest. and yes a little spill meant anything inside would get very wet indeed. This coffee cup is a bad idea don’t do it! They ditched this in 97 and it got the behind the shifter thing but they were all autos by 96 anyways so it didn’t matter so much.

Previa had that style, but was mounted below the radio, so only blocked the ash tray when it was out.

But they even mentioned the cup holder in the F4’s original marketing campaign. It must be good!

My girlfriend does the exact same thing, every time I have to ask her to put in in the door. Her argument against the door is that it “barely” fits there.
Truthfully I can deal with it being in the center, but my shifts are going to be slower and wonky so the car will jerk a little bit and she’ll complain about that.
