By that I mean cars that are pretty terrible and shitty but are also extremely reliable and unkillable. The two main ones I can think of are the Chevy Cavalier/Pontiac Sunfire and the Hyundai Excel. But what are some others?

Any cheaper 1990's GM car. Trucks too, but those are likable as well, so they don't count.

When was the last time you saw a Malibu that was truly dead?
Rust doesn’t seem to stop these traps from rolling. Hyundai Accent!

I’m going with the Pontiac Grand Am and Grand Prix, late 80’s-early 90’s Accords, Tercels.
And I think a future cockroach will be the Cobalt.

W-Bodies, but the Grand Prix’s specifically.
They are everywhere. But with a laundry list of options its no surprise.

Tercel’s aren’t actually very bad, but for a car coming up on 20 years, they’re still goddamn everywhere, even in one of the roughest parts of Canada that isn’t in the Arctic for cars. The only real problem the Riva/Signet had was rust, and in Siberia, that really wouldn’t matter, as it’s road salt that really gets to your car, and I don’t think they have a lot of that in the more barren parts of the Motherland.

My mom has a ‘98 Malibu that is pretty bulletproof. Whoever winds up with it is a lucky soul.

I’ll vouch for the Malibu. They are great commuter cars, and they will run for a very very long time without having much more than oil changes needed. The only thing is when they die, they die for good. There’ no second coming. I’ve had two, and may buy another in the future, but when their time comes, it is usually a spectacular cascade of failure telling you that the spirit is strong, but the engine is weak. Rest well little Malibu.

Another one I thought I should add is the AU Ford Falcon, I hate these things but they won’t die. I see more of these shitheaps than I do BA and BF Falcons

Dodge/Plymouth Neon.
My friend had one and didn’t change the oil for five years. It was a ‘98, I think. When we finally changed it, there was about two quarts in the car and it was the consistency of mud. It still runs today.

Anything early 90’s and Japanese.
Also: Eagles.
The interior will fall apart, but it’ll never stop running.

If you’re talking about AU’s? Fuck no, that’d be horrible but more modern Falcons like the FG would be great, just a shame that it was too costly to engineer them in LHD. Now they’re going away here as well.

And a backup- early 90’s GM 1500’s.

Can confirm on the Malibu. They left the factory as epic piles of shit, but one of these will run badly longer than most cars will run at all. The “Classic” ones (at least) had a sealed transmission which was their Achilles heel because nobody maintains them (the service costs more than the cars are worth by the time they are due) and eventually they die of this.

The Ka rusts far too quickly for it to be a cockroach car I think. I’ve seen 4 year old ones fail an MOT for rust.
