This reminds me of a story from a friend, of a testing day at a military supplier’s firing range. I won’t tell the whole thing, as it’s long, and I’ll mess it up, but it ends with a magnesium tracer ricochet into the bed of a guy’s pickup, and fire. Lots of fire.

I think it’s all about the offset between the scope and the barrel. He could see the target just fine, but didn’t realize that the barrel was below the level of the roof. As soon as he hunkers down, it’s all over. The barrel is practically resting on the roof.

I may not be the sharpest knife in the flowerbed, but I like to think that if I am not aiming at a 2 ton truck, I won’t hit said truck. That’s just me though.

That’s the thing—the view from the scope was all target. But the barrel is two inches or so below the scope, and he couldn’t see that. He thought he had a clear shot. Some lessons are hard-learned.
