Found a job that looked interesting and relevant, did well at the interview but had to turn it down. While at the interview they informed me that “be available to travel” meant “live on oil rigs for 60% of the year.” Yeah I can’t do that... Better get sending CVs again.

I don't think living on a relatively tiny dot on the map counts as travelling.

Oil rigs are dangerous anyway.

Well I would’ve moved around the UK too and trained in a different country a couple weeks a year (that’s the other 40%), but generally it meant operating on different rigs.

That sucks, I hate when employers misrepresent stuff like that. But best of luck in your job hunt.

Yeah and the flying in and out by helicopter isn’t fantastic either.

Yeah it’s a shame, I knew there was a little rig work but didn’t know it was a majority. Thanks, I need it haha.

“ While at the interview they informed me that...”
There’s the first and most important lesson of job-hunting: an interview is a two-way street; they have to persuade you that you want to work for them, as well as you persuading them that they want to hire you.

Very true. I ask a lot of questions in interviews for this reason. They might find someone happy to work under those conditions which is better for everyone. Just wasn’t a fit for me.
![]() 09/23/2015 at 07:37 |

Hmmm.... How’s the pay? Can you put in a word for me?
![]() 09/23/2015 at 07:39 |

Pay was a little above what you’d get working solely on shore in the same field, not by a huge amount though. Probably not I just emailed them saying I don’t want the job...
![]() 09/23/2015 at 07:41 |
|
So... more than $15/hr at 30hrs/week? What’s their email? I’ll take the job!
![]() 09/23/2015 at 07:42 |

Well, if they don’t understand that and bugger you around as they did, then it’s a pretty reliable sign that they’ll be terrible to work for.
![]() 09/23/2015 at 07:42 |
|
Quite a bit more than that yes. You do need a highish grade in an engineering degree though...
![]() 09/23/2015 at 07:43 |

Hrm... I have a theoretical degree in engineering. Think that’ll work?

To be fair I went through a agency who gave me the details so it might be the agency not giving me all the info not the company. They were pretty up front about it at the interview. I don’t think they meant to misrepresent, just an awkward situation.

Err... probably not.

Oh, fucking recruiters...
BTW, how’s the car search going?

but think of the money!
![]() 09/23/2015 at 07:59 |

I’m not a live to work kind of guy. I just want to earn a decent enough wage, money isn’t much of an incentive for me if I’m guna hate the job.

What field are you in? What are you looking for?
![]() 09/23/2015 at 08:46 |

I certainly enjoy travel. I think it is fun to see different locales and earn frequent flyer/ rewards stuff. But yeah that sounds terrible lol.

Mechanical Engineering and a role that preferably has some practical work involved. This had that and would’ve been perfect if not for the off shore stuff.

I have a wife and three teenage boys. God, what I do to be able to work on oil rigs 60% of the year! :)

Probably all service companies are going to have you in the field at first unless you already have prior field experience (just as an FYI). Even working with an operator I still went and roughnecked then pumped wells for a while. But hey you must be doing something right if you are getting interviews in the oil field right now. Times are getting tough!

I have you beat with my theoretical degree in theoretical engineering.
![]() 09/23/2015 at 09:12 |

Haha the interviewer actually said he'd heard people say that.
![]() 09/23/2015 at 09:13 |

It was actually a company that supplies the machinery to rigs (turbines for power generation) but yeah I was lucky to even get the interview. I don’t mind field work and travel, just specifically working on rigs isn't for me.

People with little education tend to love rig work. High pay, high percentage of your time off (contiguous weeks at a time), food is included, and they even pay for all that travel time (which can be considerable). If I hadn’t gone into my field and wasn’t such a klutz, I’d probably be doing something like that...
![]() 09/23/2015 at 09:30 |

Gotcha, yea it’s not for everyone. I’ve never worked offshore but I’ve heard it’s a real dice roll. You can get a big new rig that is like a 5 star hotel or some super shitty one that is just awful.
![]() 09/23/2015 at 09:35 |
|
If you’re single you should have taken that job. Those guys get PAID. Do it for a couple years, build a nice bank roll then move on.

Just checked our job board; nothing right now, sorry.
![]() 09/23/2015 at 10:45 |

I'm not that bothered about money to be honest, I just want a job I'm not going to hate. Even a year in a situation I dislike is too much. I know all jobs are going to be a pain in the arse sometimes but living on a rig was a bit much for me.

I can appreciate that it’s a great option for some, but it’s just not for me. I like to be around friend/ family and be able to go back to my own place at the end of the day.
![]() 09/23/2015 at 12:06 |
|
Thanks anyway, are you in engineering too?
![]() 09/23/2015 at 12:07 |

Yeah I’ve heard that too. Some have cinemas and nice restaurants, some have basically nothing.
![]() 09/23/2015 at 12:25 |

Goddamnit, even in theoretical degrees I’m underqualified.

I’m in Information Security, but I work for an organization which has diverse needs.

I believe I just added you. I can’t into Facebook very well.
