I took a trip to the dollar store for some supplies for my shop at lunch. Some guy in a minivan backed into my truck while I was walking back out. I heard the crunch, and actually thought he had hit the car next to me. He stopped and apologized, and we began looking for damage. I couldn’t see any, but I busted out a tape measure to be sure the bumper wasn’t tweaked. It wasn’t! No damage to my truck. His minivan’s hatch was another story, that had a pretty big smash in it.
Hooray for real chrome bumpers!
I didn’t think to take a picture of his damage. Here’s a much more interesting minivan accident picture, presented with no context.

That happened to me with my old truck, twice! Well once my girlfriend rear-ended me in her ES300 at a pretty slow speed. Cracked her bumper but my real bumper/trailer hitch saved me. Another time I rear-ended a Sienna, I bent my license plate and he needed a new hatch and bumper.

It can also, hypothetically speaking, be a zinc-plated bumper. Or, y’know, a direct strike to the chassis.

My dad had a old Ford Expedition and the bumper was chrome. It must of been very thin because any little thing would bend it.

Ah, the old trailer hitch! A buddy of mine slow speed rear ended a truck in his ‘95 Riviera. He punched a hole that was a perfect outline of the trailer hitch into his front bumper. The guy in the truck got out, looked at it, and said, “Well, that sucks for you!” and then drove off.

I was actually pleasantly surprised it wasn’t bent a little. Fortunately it was a very low speed hit. He was creeping out of his parking spot, and he crept a bit too far.

I had a trailer hitch incident in Atlanta traffic with my Benz getting rear-ended. I pulled over, the guy didn’t and made his escape crouching behind the wheel so he couldn’t be recognized. Joke on him, though - receiver-ball-shaped hole straight through the fascia, nary a scratch on me.
Although (driving another Benz), chrome bumpers don’t work too well if the car is heavy enough to dive *under* somebody’s trailer hitch. I did that. A hood, cracked radiator, motor mounts, thermostat housing later...

Coincidentally, my wife once rear-ended a Trailblazer/mini Blazer, with a trailer hitch, in a ‘88 Riviera and punched a hole in the (*blazer’s) gas tank. Only to be found once they got home with less gas than expected...

You just reminded me of something I’d forgotten about! Back in high school this girl in a late 80’s/early 90’s Civic totally rammed into my ‘74 Volvo (with the giant extruded aluminum bumpers mounted on shock absorbers). She smashed the shit out of her front bumper and hood. No damage whatsoever to the Volvo.

True, but even painted steel bumpers would’ve had paint damage.

That’s not mine, unfortunately. That pic is from a 144 at the Volvo museum. I wish I could find one that nice!

Trucks seem to do pretty well in rear-end accidents, at least low-speed ones. I used to have a Suzuki Sidekick (it’s a real truck, stop laughing) and got rear-ended by a guy in a (only 3 days old) Accord who was reading a paper map and didn’t notice that traffic was stopped. He probably hit me going 35-40mph. His car basically went under mine, and was properly eff’d up. The trailer hitch and gas tank protector bar thing dug into his hood, folding it up to the windshield. There was some pretty decent damage to the engine bay and the top of the engine as well. I drove off of his car, parked on the median so we could exchange info and wait for the cops, and then continued on my way to work.

This is one reason I kinda want a truck, or an old car. My father in law has hit 6 deer with his 03 Excursion with no damage to the car truck, he doesn’t even brake for them anymore. There is however a small dent in the passenger side of the bumper from hitting a small bear at approximately 40 mph.
