I have to say that sportswriting and sports journalism in general has to be the most silly and pointless activity in human history.

To put a more positive spin on it, the fact that these careers exist are proof that humanity is doing pretty well :D

My first reaction when I saw your post title: “It’s not afternoon yet!!!”

*looks down and sees the time*

“Holy shit! It’s afternoon already?!? I have so much more to do!”

*looks up at post*

SPORTSBALL!!!

I worked as a sports journalist for 4 1/2 years after school and I still freelance a couple times a week during the school year.

On the professional level, interviews are pretty pointless. Most athletes/coaches are so guarded that almost none of them (outside of maybe Richard Sherman) say anything interesting.

At the community and high school level, people still like to see their kids in the paper. And while as a freelancer all I do is game reporting, the true value of sportswriting is feature stories.

Besides, journalism is still the first draft of history.

Mayhaps, but it’s a helluva lot of fun to do. Sports photography has always been one of the better parts of my job. And I’ve had the good fortune to cover a lot of really uplifting human interest stories rooted in sports. Covering the doom and gloom of hard news 24/7 can be pretty taxing, making sports journalism — at least at the hyperlocal level — a nice reprieve sometimes. :)

Ahhhh! I’m so glad you chimed in. It’s good to see ya, Jake, and I couldn’t have said it any better myself. Covering local sports stories can be so, so rewarding.

And yes, yes, yes on journalism being the first draft of history. The weight of that responsibility is crazy sometimes, but also exhilarating.

Nah, it’s just not a conversation that occurred in Texas. Or on the Green Bay sideline....

It is also how I feel when I hear most politicians speak.

The definition of nothingness is listening to any interview given by John Fox ever. He will use 1500 words and yet you will receive no new information. I don’t know why anyone bothers to ask him questions.
