Anyone have experience with one of the newer 7 speed manuals? Seems like that’s a LOT of shifting.
I’m driving a 5-speed here in NYC and am juuuuust about over it.
(*Yes I know BMW doesn’t make a 7 speed manual)

It’s my understanding that 7th gear on these transmissions is really just an extra overdrive for extra-low-RPM highway cruising. So at less-than-highway speeds you’re probably not really doing much more shifting, if at all.

I don’t think that’s where the 7 goes, haha.
I think they’re pointless. I rarely use 6th as it is.

I'm on interstate highways daily. I wouldn't mind another gear for cruising at 80. I'm in sixth more than any other gear so my perspective is different.

But 6th is a cruising gear, why would you need a third cruising gear?

I have a 6-spd and the pattern gets crowded. 7 would need to be way off to the side for me as an overdrive...

Hated it in the c7. Theres a stretch of road I can bomb in 3rd in the c6 z06 that required about ten gear changes.

I nevee use fifth. But my commute is not so hi speed.
But when i hit the highway. I wish my mustang had a 6th gear

Same, I’m usually in 4th if the speed limit is 25-35. For 45+ I’ll be in 5th and for long distance cruises without stoplights I’ll be in 6th.

Nah, in normal driving it wouldn’t change the number of shifts very much. The 7th is more of an additional gear rather than packing the other gears closer together.
The close-ratio trans in my Sonic RS means lots of shifting. 4.18 final drive FTW!! haha

Is that really the 7th gear’s fault?

At least partly. The gears were too close together for my taste.

I back in my driveway, which is about 4 cars deep and down hill. When I leave, I’m in second by the time I get to the curb.
I do lots of second gear starts. My clutch my not last quite as long as Chevy says it should. Haha

I use 6th for those extra MPGs. I also skip shift from 3rd to 5th to save gas when im not bbbbooooooooossssttiinnnggg

When I was still new I did a lot of second gear starts, but I’ve stopped for fear of destroying the transmission. I never use first from anything but a stop though, it’s just not worth it.
It's a shame too, I get what they were trying to do but I wish we had at least a log enough ratio to hit 60 in second. Having to use 3rd at autocross blows

Considering how tall 6th and 7th gear are, you’d be more likely skip gears to get to them quicker to save fuel.

Yeah I hear ya on 1st. There is no reason to use it above 8 mph haha
I don’t think second gear starts hurt the trans much as long as you don’t over or under-rev it as you pull away, (which is easy to do.) Under rev is a no-no as it’s easy to lug the engine too much. Starting in second will probably only wear the clutch a little faster do to the longer time slipping since you have to let the clutch out slower to be smooth pulling away in that gear.
I have only done 2 autocrosses in this car so far, and didnt really push super hard in either. I really just wanted to feel how the car moved around at the limit, and they weren’t very high speed courses so I didn’t have too much trouble with the gearing in those limited cases.
I do really like the short gearing for spririted driving on the road though. It’s easy to view lots of shifting and the 3rd gear/60mph thing as negative, but I think that is what really give this car it’s character. It has a fairly narrow power band, so it’s fun working the little engine and little turbo to keep it on boil. The short gearing helps that and keeps you feeling an integral part of the driving fast experience. I think the car shifts noticeably better above 3k rpm.
I drove a c6 on the road not too long ago and I was almost bored by how little I had to shift to make it go fast.
