I have a 2010 Golf TDI which apparently emits 10-40 times the allowable emissions. What do you guys think will happen? A recall on all the 09-15 cars and a drop in their value? Or do you think they’ll still be on the same depreciation trajectory?

I legitimately think that private market cars without the recall done on them will be worth more. Emissions equipment causes cars to be slower and less efficient. Keep yours unfixed for as long as you can.

Mine is a 2013 and my VA emissions aren’t up until 2017, it “passed” this summer even before the first ecm recall “reprogram” but this is going to be a mess to sort out and I don’t expect it to happen in a timely fashion.

Look at pre cat diesel trucks. I 100% agree with this sentiment.

VW might be forced to offer a buyback.

I hope the value drops like a rock. Then I would I would buy one in a heartbeat.

Also depends on whether the relevant state has inspection, and if diesel cars have to be inspected. Many states that have inspection do exempt diesel cars.

Didn’t GM do this in the late 70s as well? I think it may have been the Pontiac 400 that the emissions equipment only worked at idle, in order to pass the test.

If only Detroit executives were as crucified for their roles in collapsing the auto industry to the point they needed to be bailed out.

Besides, all non-third-world market cars from the past 20 years are essentially zero-emitting.

I bet values don’t change much. It isn’t like the pre-DPF trucks, where they will have some new device attached. If anything, value may come down a little, especially if all the general public hears from this is the VW diesels are broken or may not pass emissions. Depending on the resolution - a recall, reprogramming, etc, the general market will adjust values accordingly but I don’t see them going up.

Just like a DPF/emissions deleted TDI might have some unique value to an enthusiast (or not), a specific non-recall adjusted TDI might have some unique value to an enthusiast, but that will be a unique thing and not reflective of prices in the market at large.

I bet fuel economy comes down post-recall. I’m speculating here, but it seems like they may have to lower boost, increase EGR, and probably more frequent DPF burn-off. That would increase fuel usage and maybe lower power a bit. The SCR (DEF) equipped cars (I think only the Passat?) might fare better since SCR can be used to reduce NOx.

Mine’s good until October next year. I've had the first reprogram done about 5k miles ago with no real complaint. I really would NOT want a new reprogramming for emissions stuff although my eventual plan is a dpf delete and retune anyways.

This was a good post! I was thinking they may go down a bit but... Hopefully not! If they do, then maybe VW will have to compensate us for the value drop!

If they do, I will consider participating, depending on how adversely the car’s performance is affected. This doesn’t please me at all (I bought a ‘15 Golf Sportwagen TDI just over two months ago.)

I’m only a few tanks into the reprogram and I haven’t gone on a serious road trip to see if there was a significant mileage difference. Glad to hear that its not my imagination that the car wasn’t running differently.

Nope. Seems to be the same for me pre and post reprogram.

I was wondering about that. If somebody bought the car expecting as-written performance and that’s not the case, isn’t that some type of false-pretense thing? Somebody fire up the Lehto-signal!

It happened with the NB Miata because Mazda quoted JDM power figures which were a few hp above USDM models. So I definitely think it’s a real possibility. Those who didn’t participate in the buyback got free service in return.
