we’ve all seen it/heard/said it. That car should only come with a manual. It takes the soul and fun out of the car with an automatic.

Kinja'd!!!

in my search for a Jaguar, I’ve started to wonder if some cars are ment to be automatic. Now before you guys lose your minds, and say ‘No!!! Manual all the cars’, just think for a minute. The corolla probably deserves a CTV. It really just exists to get from point A to point B as boring and efficiently as possible.

Kinja'd!!!

But what about the Jaguar?

Kinja'd!!!

If the XJ could have been, each would have had a factory installed chauffeur. The whole car is based around the idea of comfortable cruising, luxury, and arriving in classy style. Why would you want to row your own gears when you probably have someone at your house hired to wipe your ass for you? Anyway, my search/dream for a manual Jag continues.

I totally agree. I’d say a panther with anything but a column shift automatic is just wrong.

there are a LOT of us that think all the manual fanboys can take their precious stick and shove it where the sun dont shine. its isnt a new thing.

Some cars, yes, should be manual. FRS, FiST, etc etc. but a big luxo barge? a pickup truck? a minivan? lets be real here

I would suggest that purpose for the car plays in also... I’ve only done one track day, but based on that experience, I could totally make the argument for a good auto on a dedicated track car.

On the street, I want the additional involvement of clutch and shifter; on the track, I’d rather focus on line and speed.

If you have a valid left leg and a valid right arm, I really don’t see the point for automatics... And even then, I would still find a way to shift myself lol.

Automatics are for people who are giving up. “Oh but I have a long commute and lots of traffic!!” So what?? Get a car with a light clutch if that’s this much of a problem for you... Unless you’re handicapped, don’t give a single fuck about driving or drive a car that needs to be fast to the point where gaining 0.02s on each gear shift is important, then one has no excuse for driving an automatic. (And if you need a minivan in America, just get a Renault Espace)

I totally agree. When I’m on a two lane back road, my Dad’s truck is fine, but as soon as you are in traffic, shifting and maneuvering is just annoying. Traffic in a manual is annoying in general, but especially in something huge.

About the only vehicle that makes me upset when there is no manual available is a 4x4 pickup truck. That’s the only one. I can live with an auto in just about any other application, but there’s just something awesome about driving a big truck with a manual. Especially off-road.

The manual-only camp needs to chill a bit. I personally will probably only be buying manual cars exclusively for a good while, because I like it, but autos really aren’t that bad. Not everything needs to be ALL SPEED PERFECT CONTROL SUCK MY APEX always.

Yes. It depends on the vehicle- I think a manual in a 458 Speciale would be somewhat detrimental, as whatever manual Ferrari could throw together could not possibly be as fast shifting as their dual clutch

I bought an 89 escort new of the lot and it was a manual. It was a dog with no power, thank goodness I could rev it and wind through the gears quickly. Every car I have purchased since 1989 has been a manual: 96 Ranger, 06 GT Mustang, 08 Jeep Liberty (6 speed go figure), 14 Focus ST. I hope the manual never goes away because I could never buy a new car again. Good luck on your search the the manual jag.

I think you can justify a manual for most cars. So what if the Corolla is an economy car? Manuals were always cheaper (not sure if that’s still the case), and make the little thing a bit of fun.

if you were looking for something fun you wouldn;t be looking at a corolla. I also couldn;t imagine a manual being more efficient than the CTV.

But it’s not as simple as that. Not everyone who wants a fun car has the luxury of getting a sports car, or a faster hot hatch. Some (most?) people only have the need and the means for a modest car when it comes to commuting. Opting for a manual can make a modest car a bit more exciting.

My first car was a manual Pulsar hatch for that very reason.

It may not be more efficient, that may depend on how you drive it. But yes, you’d probably be trading a little fuel for a little fun. As is often the case :)
