Seeing as I drive one on a daily basis, just keep driving mine.

I have the 3.0 AWD manual X-Type.

I’d been under the impression that because Mondeo, these were OK reliability wise... ish. There was one sort of camping out at the import repair shop here for a while, though - might have put the lie to that. Anyway, parts should be available as long as you don’t mind waiting for them.

Jaguar Mondeo is best Mondeo.

There’s at least one Opponaut that loves the one they have, and highly recommends it.

Always liked these, nearly bought one of the facelifted ones with the nicer interior and sat-nav.

It’s the AJ30 so basically the Duratec 30. Mine has 140k on it now and it seems to be holding up pretty well.

I know a couple people who forced the company to buy this car back from them under NY lemon law.

Is it really based on the mondeo?

Same platform as the 3rd gen Mondeo. People like giving shit to X-Type owners by calling their cars fancy Mondeos.

Wouldn’t touch it unless I could afford setting aside $200-300/month for maintenance and repair.

Yeah, it’s *based* on the Ford Mondeo. But it’s not 100% Ford Mondeo.

And based on what I’ve heard, the manual is better, more reliable and more durable than the automatic. The same thing applies to the Ford Contour, Ford Probe, Mercury Mystique and FWD Mercury Cougar.

Here are some bad experiences... one including transmission problems (automatic):

And some have had good experiences:

http://www.carsurvey.org/reviews/jaguar…

http://www.carsurvey.org/reviews/jaguar…

http://www.carsurvey.org/reviews/jaguar…

http://www.carsurvey.org/reviews/jaguar…

You’ll notice that even those with good experiences admit there are problems.

So if you can afford to set aside $200-$300/month for maintenance and repairs, it can be an enjoyable car to own. And I’d say closer to $200/month if you can do a lot of the maintenance and some of the repairs yourself. That’s approximately what I spent on my Saab 9-3 over the 4 years I had it... and that car was based on the Mondeo’s direct competitor, the Opel Vectra.

Even though it’s based on the Mondeo, that doesn’t mean it will be a cheap car. This is no Toyota Yaris.

If it comes with a warranty longer than your financing term with no deductible, go for it. Or shop around and find an X-Type Estate, because Jaaaaaaaag Waaaaaaaagon.

No idea, but it is a Jaguar so I’m assuming the transmission will puke itself out of the car at some point.

Hey look a Ford Contour.

I’ve always had a thing for those, but the build quality leaves much to be desired.
