This violates the very spirit of what safety is supposed to be. These are so flimsy they couldn’t support a bag of feathers, let alone a grown man. Another home is in earlier today? They collapsed. It would be better to have nothing at all, so people would know to exercise even more caution. These do nothing and if you take a stumble you’re fucked. You’ll also get a few rusty nails going through you to distract from your broken legs.

What's going on here? Base is on, shouldn't the casing be too? or at least drywall returns.

Really... with that pole on the corner it isn’t that freakin hard to run a damn lag bolt into the column and put a half decent piece of wood in there. Off-campus housing?

Although it does look like it’s still under construction, so that might not be the finished product?

It doesn’t look finished yet. And no, they won’t hold the full weight of an adult falling into them, but if you trip, they could help you to keep your balance and not go rolling down.

When buying my first house, there was a temporary set of stairs on the back of it with a really flimsy wooden railing, the inspector said if I didn’t get it strong enough to support 250 pounds we couldn’t close on the house. My excuse of “Well, we only have skinny friends” didn’t seem to work, got a good laugh though hahaha.

(in my defense we were just stalling until spring to put a deck on, which he actually agreed to as long as it was done by a certain date - you can’t build them in February in Michigan)

The summation is this is the bare minimum effort to comply with state safety rules on guardrails being in place wherever a fall of over 3 feet is a risk, when in fact these are unsafe because of the quality and because their very presence implies they’re meeting requirements when clearly they are... not safe at all.

The carpenters build those posts last.

Yes it’s not finished — the point is that there has to be a structurally sound temporary rail until it is completed.

“The carpenters build those posts last.”

Why is that? I’m in trim supply and it’s got me curious.

Okay, that’s definitely not it! Kinda like making a car bumper out of wood... you know it’s not going to last one hit!

Well to preface, I am not a carpenter so forgive me. Around here in new construction there’s typically 3 local companies that are used. They all have their ways of doing things, but at these homes, the railing in one of the last things to go in. So, they build around the threshold on the stairs, then the painters paint all the molding, and then the carpenters come later and start the posts and build out to finish the railing. The short answer is: I’m not sure why. Just what they do here.

sounds like it’s so the shitty painters don’t paint all over their nice wood.

The people at the Ice Hotel would disagree! LOL

Lies! I personally witnessed a railing like that support a bag of feathers!

A small bag...

Wow, that’s pretty horrible. I’m trying to figure out why they didn’t just run dryall up those steps. I guess it’s one of those “open concept” things. Which I get, but if If all I'm looking at is stairs why do I really care? What will eventually go in there? Wooden railing and balusters?

It would be better to have nothing at all, so people would know to exercise even more caution. Word! The family of a friend of mine removed all handrails after renovation because it looked artsy. A bit dangerous, but no matter how drunk we got at their place nothing ever happened. Pure instinct tells you to be cautious on those stairs no matter how wasted you are.

Now her brother lives in that house and he has a toddler. Come to think of it, I’ll have to check if they did something about that.

The Ice Hotel is entirely carved out of ICE.

That wouldn’t work so well when it got to 100* that summer, I needed a deck made out of WOOD.

And with how much shit that stupid planning/permitting office gave me over the deck, we would have lost our mind with an Ice one.

Pfft... minor detail... LOL.

“we would have lost our mind with an Ice one.”

But could you imagine their reactions to an ice deck application? It would be comedic GOLD!!

Hahaha, it would have.

It was a pretty f-ing insane process honestly.

it was an 8 foot by 10 foot deck. Pretty simple rectangle, 6 posts into the ground and 2 mounting points to the house. Contractor drew said rectangle and then indicated where the posts would go. They asked for more detail. He’s like “it’s a rectangular deck, what the hell else do they want to know?!”

Then they told me the permit cost would be based off the cost of the deck, so i budgeted the 100 bucks needed. Then i went to pay and they said, nope it adds more value than the cost, you must have gotten a really could deal, we think it adds $X value to your house, so now your permit is $220, and if you don’t pay we’ll put a stop work notice on your house so he can’t build it without incurring fines (higher than the 220). Extortionist bastards.

They were also so stupid that instead of saying on their “Requirement list” that it be wolmanized wood they said we needed “womanized”

Womanized wood... so that’s like wood that was formerly used in dildos, right?

LOL

well, dildo’s can be used on both sexes, so that doesn’t work. I think it’s mainly been dipped in an estrogen treatment or it only comes from female trees haha
