I’m sitting in church on Sunday and we have a wonderful woman stand up in front of the congregation talking about her work with neglected, handicapped children in Zambia. Really an amazing outreach, but that’s not why I’m writing this.

She started her presentation by saying, “I know many of you have no idea where Zambia is, so if you picture Africa and start in the south, simply go one-third up the continent and you’ll be around where Zambia is.”

Perfect, because if there’s one thing Americans are worse at than geography, it’s fractions...

I graduated with two girls that up until 11th grade had no clue Washington state and Washington D.C. were two separate locations.

I knew a guy on Oppo who spelled the word separate, “seperate.”

My buddy teaches high school history, the stories he tells about his students astound me.

I think about this every time I have to put my tent in its stuff sack. You have to fold it in fifths for it to fit correctly...how many Americans can fold an oddly shaped not-flat chunk of fabric into fifths?

I’d agree, but I also blame the tent manufacturer on this one. 2,3,4 and 6 are much easier. When folding you should not have to use prime numbers above 3.

Sadly, these were teacher’s kids.

My cousin was in 9th grade with a guy who believed corn grew in a can.

I'm ok with fractions but geography no.

When covering the Industrial Revolution he asked his class to brainstorm renewable resources. He called on a young lady who had her hand raise and she answered “clouds,” how he didn’t laugh I have no idea.
