Given the FP news with the neighborhood oil-money hoonery, I ask this simple question: Are affluenza and car culture related, connected, something together?

You know what I mean(hopefully):

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Now looking back, I too can come to the conclusion that no one alive works hard enough to own a car like that(save for the GT3), or is that still a generalization?

Probably about as much as anything else. College, houses, bills, etc.

Nope. Dicking about with cars is just another thing to do for people who are running out of things to do like dwarf tossing or prostitute racing.

Also some do work for it:

People do dumb things regardless of their level of income or affluence. Its just that people on the internet get more worked up about it when its those with wealth/means and the thing they fuck up is an object of interest for those without. That shit makes “news”, and becomes the pattern you observe more than the baseline.

I don’t want to be bombarded with replies, here’s just my quick thoughts:

In terms of Jay Leno or Adam Carolla, those that appreciate all the mechanics and details of jeweled cars, Yes.

Kinja'd!!!

In terms of affluent rappers that just want the flashiest, most expensive car available, Also yes. But a different type of culture. One that I dislike, as opposed to the one above.

I don’t believe so. Loads of people are irresponsible without loads of money involved. And these are the 1% of enthusiasts who misbehave themselves.

Whoever coined the term ‘affluenza’ should be drawn and quartered.

That said, I’m sure there’s a group for whom being wealthy enough to be an idiot isn’t a good enough reason for them to do it. It’s probably a much larger group than we think... I mean who wants to post a video of a rich guy driving his Ferrari responsibly and skillfully? Nobody, that’s who. We just hear about the idiots more often. A very vocal minority

Douchebags generally really want other people to know how successful they are (or want to appear to be). Really rich douchebags tend to do this by buying really expensive cars, and then show off using those cars.

There are plenty of people who have absurdly nice cars who are also really cool, down-to-earth people. Look at Jay Leno if you need an example of that.

Nothing is going to directly determine someone’s personality. Not their nationality, their wealth, their skin color, their orientation, nothing. These things might have influences, since we’re all shaped by the culture we’re immersed in, but you can’t ever directly draw a line and say “All [x] are [y]”

Believe it or not, some rich people do work for their money. And some of them do love their cars. It’s just the ones that don’t garner the most attention.

This ain’t ‘car culture’.

If you look close, the cars involved in such idiotic actions are nearly always unmodified late model supercars from well known brands.

These morons aren’t bothering about the cars they are driving. It seems as they are just driving by the BMW dealer and order the new M3 cause they saw it as road and tracks cover car but didn’t even read the article.

They lose interest soon, and as money seems to be a relatively unlimited resource for this clientel, trashing the car is not so much of a problem, espescially as the next model will arrive eventually. As they will swap it, they won’t modify it. There’s no use in making something better and induvidually satisfing, if you will part with it in the forseeable future.

no...this is just morons driving beyond their limits. they just happen to have fancy cars. there are crashes that happen every day. a good portion are because someone drove too fast/douchey.

this just the news because frankly, no one gives a rats tit if a 99 grand prix was stuffed into a wall. now, a 1/250 ferrari? thats a little more interesting. (also, the ferraris are usually being recorded. the grand prix, not so much

It’s been said that less than 10% of the world’s population owns a car. I may not feel rich, but I admit that I am among that top 10%. A ten-second visit to Global Rich List can really put your own wealth into perspective.

Car ownership is an expensive thing in the US, often costing a few thousands dollars (or more) annually. Is there a connection between affluenza and car culture? One can be wealthy without having a car (a rare occurrence, I suspect), but I don’t think one can own a car without some measure of wealth.

When you have millions to burn, cars are a very visible way of showing that off.

Plenty of asshats hoon shit cars where I live. Some of it probably ends up on the internet. But the world doesn't care about another video of someone driving a 20-year-old Honda that sounds like a lawnmower. There's idiocy at every socio-economic level.
