A local news story about people being angry about kids from the suburbs going into Detroit and drag racing on random streets. Their (potential) solution? Take fully abandoned areas and turn them into sanctioned drag strips. Not a bad idea. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

Yeah, that never works. Even if you turn empty abandoned areas into drag strips, no one wants to pay the insurance for those things. And your average ricer is already paying too much in insurance. That’s why. Once someone gets killed or injured then someone will sue somebody.

People have been drag racing in Detroit forever... It’s not the crazy youths! Every old dude has a story about racing light to light down Woodward

Which of course is dumb, since they’ll race regardless. But I don’t think you’re wrong.

Yeah, but those are people from the suburbs, racing on a part of woodward that is in the suburbs.
The unofficial slogan for the dream cruise is “Avoiding the actual Motor City since 1994!”

Potential sites for the sanctioned drag racing is open land near City Airport or the old Chrysler Plant on Lynch Road.
Interesting ideas. But how about the airport itself?

Doesn’t Car & Driver use the airport for time trials?

Or the state fairgrounds. Ever since detroit dragway closed I’ve been waiting for someone to do this.

That sure would make landings more exciting next time I fly into Detroit City.
