I am biased, I’ve owned a Fiat 124, restored it, modded it, shredded it and sold it, not before first removing the rear seats and using it for MTB transport myself. I can’t help but think Josh Bryceland does it with more style and her certainly does it with more speed.

I am looking at buying one of these in Spring. Any advice?

Assuming rust isn’t an issue my primary advice is to not count on the rear end holding up to any abuse, including sticky rubber or increased power. My car was virtually rust free and I stripped it and repainted it to be ‘Abarth’ themed.
Later I modified the front suspension to use a more traditional coilover and Honda vented brakes from a late 90’s Si. In the rear I used stock brakes, but e30 Billstein dampers. I also removed the rear seat, stock carpeting and redid most of the interior, on a budget.
The late model cars which were fuel injected seem to be dead reliable, some 70’s cars were really starved for airflow/fuel so make sure to take caution on which carb’d models you consider, some were real dogs.
My goal was to create something which could hang with a Miata but still have a vintage look, I succeeded and would do it again, but I don’t think you need to mod the car to enjoy it.
Here is my complete build on flickr.

Some highlights imo...

Exactly the way I want to build one. I found one with solid floors, but with some rust on the doors. Interior is brand new, and if he doesn’t sell it this fall, he is tucking it away until spring. It is a 76, and parts don’t really seem that expensive for them.

Parts are cheap... thanks to Lada or whoever mass produced the snot out of them. The twin cam is about the easiest engine iv’e ever worked on too. I wish there was a way you could hit me up later if you have questions but Kinja... not so much about community... more about clicks. har har.

I am thinking I just want to do the suspension up really nice, do some steel racing wheels, nice exhaust, and just enjoy it. Put a roll bar, some long slung racing buckets that mimic 60s ones, wood wheel, and just enjoy it.

They rust if you look at them the wrong way... Make sure you get the most solid example you can find.
Other than that, they’re a blast to drive.
