I finally got to drive the F80 M3 today (as well as the M235i, newest M5, M6 GC, and the X6M). BMW was nice enough to invite me to their ///M Trackday at Road Atlanta today. And to think I almost didn’t even signup.. Originally I thought it was a copy of the Performance Center ///M School on the road, and was going to be even more expensive. When I found out it was complementary I knew I had to take a day off work to go. They described it as a lead/follow trackday, and I was a little skeptical going in assuming they would have us follow an instructor going 7/10ths of a normal trackday pace. I have to say I don’t think I could of gone much faster if I had the track to myself. We only got to drive the M3 and M5 on the track, everything else was used on the autocross course, and drag racing. All in all it was a great way to waste a weekday!

//M is still the best, I love what they're putting out, maybe a little less than what AMG is doing but still great

Yeah, there’s something for everyone in the lineup. Personally I would only consider the M3, or the M235i. The M4 was just too big for a coupe. It’s become more of a GT car than I want. I would settle with the M3 because at least it’s practical. The M235i is the right size, and a pretty capable little car. I image with a LSD, and the dynamic suspension it would be a perfect daily that could also be tracked on weekends out of the box. It doesn’t have the same material quality as the rest of the cars. Going from an M6 to the M235i made that obvious.

Fun. Thoughts on the E90 vs the F80?

M2 coming soon!

Handles better, and has more torque. It feels like the center of gravity is lower than the E90. The steering feel is numb though, and not to repeat every journalist, but the engine doesn’t sound that great. I wouldn’t give up our cars and $40K for one. I’m really looking forward to the M2, should be a fantastic car.

Me too man! If it’s as good as the 1 M, and they don’t have a huge dealer markup I may have to get one.

1M had a hydraulic rack, but other than that, it seems like it should be very similar. And I’m pretty sure that they’re not limiting production, so markups shouldn’t be an issue.

If it’s really good, I might end up in one in 5+ years - ha!
