"4muddyfeet - bare knuckle with an EZ30" (4muddyfeet)

Back in Feb 2007, second year university, I completed a design project in collaboration with Land Rover. The project was to design an urbanised-but-still-a-Land-Rover Land Rover that appealed to a younger audience. The project was only a couple of months long over the Christmas period, but gave me some useful connections and taught me a way of working which eventually led me into and then out of the industry. Our entire projects were sent away to Land Rover for marking, with our tutors having final say after Land Rover had given their opinion. I received an OK-ish grade if I remember correctly.
Tonight I’ve been going through my old design works, and I opened the ‘Uni’ folder for a good chuckle. Lo and behold, the Land Rover project came along, and popped in the top left corner of this display board is...
...something a bit Evoque-y. I do remember drawing it, but it wasn’t ever to be my final design, only an exploration sketch, so was pushed to the wayside.
The LRX concept debuted in Dec 2007.
Obviously it’s not exactly the same, but the headlights and grille share remarkable similarities, along with the high belt and snub-nose. Just sayin’...

Royalties! Nice sketches, by the way. I had dreams of attending the Art Center in Pasadena when I was younger. Thus, I did something similar with the Ferrari 550 Maranello in high school, though not rendered to the same level. I just drew what I thought a new Daytona would look like and it turns out it was almost a dead ringer for the 550 that came out couple of years later.

Ha! I wish. If it was anything like the Triumph project we did, then the collaborator gets sole rights :/

just to rub it in a bit more, I wad driving down the Fosse Way today, and was overtaken by a Jag SUV and a range rover evoque cabriolet both wrapped in disguise prototype vinyl, and both likely to make their company billions. They looked nice. You did a great job.

When I was in college we did a project for ‘a defense contractor’ where we were looking for possibilities to defend military vehicles from RPG’s. My group decided on a concept and I did a 3D model of a Humvee with a post on each side and 3-4 tubes coming off of each post with countermeasures in each. Tell me if you don’t see that on almost every deployed military vehicle nowadays. The system looks just like what we thought up. Of course no royalties for us, just free labor!

Can you shed some light on why designers won’t step away from the conventional aesthetic when drawing up a concept car? High hip line, razor thin windows, GIGANTIC wheels, zero wheel gap, etc. I understand it pulls influence from racing, but dear lord, these things are starting to make it to production and it’s not practical at all.

Every era seems to have a shape that’s knocking around every car designer’s head.
In the ‘90s, the nuggety shape of the first Audi TT got sketched by loads of people before and after the launch of the concept. In the early ‘00s, I guess the Aston Martin DB9 took up that position, and for the ‘10s, it’s still that Evoque.
You’re in good company

Definitely looks similar - I’m sure Northumbria University will be straight on to them, since unfortunately, the university own the copyright to all work carried out as part of your course!
When I was retraining in graphic design, they actually claimed copyright over any work carried out on the premises! Even if I was doodling stuff on my own Mac for my own entertainment…

I agree, even when you are not asked to re-invent a classic car, same theme, different designers, the result is similar for that era, for example I still have drawings of identical Mini. Anyway do you tell me what’s the trick to be listed in Jalopnik ? Please, I wish to release a news...!

You obviously have taken some mid level industrial design classes, and these are a good start for ideation. However, this is a different design. The side section, Grill proportion and DLO are different. Cut lines indicate your design is a 4 Door and none of the graphics match.

I sketched this in my second year in Transportation Design(2006)..I actually think i made a decent guess about the future of BMW’s surface language/graphic element design. But of course, i really was just doing what we are trained to do in school- take exsisting brand designs(production and concepts) and make an educated guess on which rough direction their styling will go(aka what is already in the studio).
Now that I have some experience in the industry i can say that sometimes there are just styling trends that design students tend to mimic, and the above sketch is just me expressing what my peers, teachers and industry was inevitability heading towards anyways. Nice work though !

“...but gave me some useful connections and taught me a way of working which eventually led me into and then out of the industry.”
I got my feet wet in the car design culture back in 2013 (one semester at CCS in Detroit for a masters) only to jump out faster than I got in. It wasn’t exactly the match made in heaven I thought it would be, even though I was actually doing very well there. What’s your story for leaving?

Bwahaha, I drive a 900 and I tried to be an architect. The program at my university was absurdly difficult to get into, so I ended up with just a history degree (my original plan was to double major because I wanted to do things like restorations, appropriate additions to older buildings, and designing new building to complement historic districts).

“Land Rover that appealed to a younger audience.”
Well, from this millenial’s perspective, they did. I absolutely loathe 99% of modern car design, but I really like the Evoque. I saw one in the metal for the first time this week, and it looked amazing in a slate blue metallic. The sad, sad irony for Land Rover is that one of my most highly-valued traits in a vehicle is reliability, which means I’ll never, ever buy one.

they are similar in that they have a 3/4 view, are fairly square, and have four wheels. Don’t seen other line that is even remotely similar. Not trying to shit on you, just being honest. Your drawing is cool, but it doesn’t share any features with the evoque, the rake on the roof is in the OPPOSITE direction. Your drawing looks more like a Chevy volt than a evoque

Yeah as a student I also thought I designed everything before anyone else. Then you realize that you also copied most concept sketches you’ve seen from car companies or other design students, just like any other modern acclaimed designers.
Nice stealth brag for anyone impressed by students sketches though.

I was a transportation design major at art center in pasadena. Trust me, this happens all the time and is purely coincedental. I remember one student even tried suing a car company, thinking they ripped off his design for the Pontiac Solstice. Your situation happens more often than not.

As an industrial designer I get very frustrated with shit like this. Lets just say perhaps, that you DID give them the idea for it. You never get any money of course. But what really chaps my ass, is that they never even tell people who actually came up with the idea. Were treated like nameless and faceless concept puppets. Its bologna.

No wonder new cars are so wacko stupid. You can’t even see out of those windows. I got sea sick in the back seat of that Evoque stylistic dead end. Think staring at four walls of plastic panels for an hour sitting in the back of that car while going down the street. If that doesn’t make you vomit, don’t know what will. Is as bad as sitting a paddy wagon that killed Freddie Gray. What art schools call “style” is the dumbest thing yet to happen to automotive design. Make those windows bigger so you can actually see where you are driving!
We rented a Chevy Spark on vacation. The rear windows were so stupid tiny kids hated riding in that thing. They were staring at plastic interior the entire vacation. What the crap is that kind of styling. Is an economy car with no power yet is trying to look like a sports car. In the end, it achieved neither, but served as a stupid styling exercise for some intern.

Neat, but I don’t see it as similar enough to the Evoque theme to really claim heritage to your sketch. I actually prefer your top right sketch, which looks like some sort of Prius MPV. What did your final design look like? I assume you went to Coventry or some such thing... (CCS grad here)

Land Rover consistently gets terrible reports for reliability. This isn’t a new or controversial assessmemt. The used market is full of LRs and RRs that are falling apart.

Seeing as you were designing with their brand styling in mind, it wouldn’t be a stretch to come up with similar styles. I see more resemblance to the 2004 Range Stormer Concept ( Which if I recall correctly, inspired the Evoque ) with a slightly more road friendly visible headlight connecting the front to the sides.
