When the government starts talking about putting the army on the streets and setting up a 6 pm curfew to control crime and violence. 6 pm guys, that’s when you start risking getting murdered on the streets down here in Brazil. Yep, things keep getting worse.

I suppose I didn’t wanna grow old anyways.

One of my profs was a Brazilian Stanford Economics PhD. She was never very optimistic out the Brazilian economic and political situation. Silver lining, she always said Argentina is far worse.

Not good. Small groups of soldiers may still get attacked too.

Although on the other hand... at least you’re not in Venezuela.

Bodes well for the Olympics.

Honestly... I’m not so sure about that anymore. Argentina is broken to hell and back, but at least the country kind of Works in a basic sense of the word. At least that’s what it seems to me whenever I visit. I’ve driven through Argentina all the way to Chile three times in the last two years, without booking anything at all in advance, and at least the country is well structured, clean and probably far safer than here. I wouldn’t do that in Brazil for a million dollars.

Oh man, hate to break it to you, but right now is notthe best time to come here. I mean, I know several South american countries are having trouble with organized crime lately, but down here, it’s chaos. You go out for a walk at 3 pm where I live, and you’re almost guaranteed to get a gun or a knife in your face. Past 5, you have to think twice about going to a shop or to the Market or whatever because there’s a good chance the place will get robbed and you’ll end up a hostage. Past 6, the authorities will invite you to go back inside because they can’t keep you safe anymore.

That’s true... At least we’re not dealing with resources rationing and stuff. Still, I figure it won’t be long before we come to that.

I wish, but I don’t have Money or job perspectives in other countries... Not to mention I’d be able to get a visa for 6 months, tops, then I’d have to go illegal. Which is starting to sound really attractive, now that I think about it.

Maybe you should move? I’m sure going into debt moving to somewhere else is cheaper than your life.

That’s hardly feasible. I don’t have the funds, or the credit to do so. Brazilian Money is Worth jack shit right now, and as a college student, I’d be able to get a 6 months visa, tops. Not even Germany would want me right now, and they’re taking up all those refugees.

To be fair, this violence wave is more of a state thing, but yeah, it will look real good for Brazil to have the army out in the streets during the (feces and trash ridden) olympics to keep people from being mugged in broad daylight.

Not really. Plus, even moving around within Brazil is very expensive and difficult. Odds are you’ll end up dead in the road anyways.

You can’t cause trouble if you’re stuck on 294 for 3 hours a day.

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah, right... My classes still go till 8 pm, curfew or no. Only reason I got out early today is because we had an easy exam in the last period. The curfew is more like a suggestion than an actual rule, it only means the cops won’t be patrolling after that time.

Well, ok, it isn’t THAT bad yet, but even moving within Brazil is very expensive and requires a lot of planning. I’m in college though, so I’m stuck until I graduate in two years. Assuming I live that long.

Just read the WSJ this morning and S&P downgraded Brazilian debt to junk status. Things are looking like they’ll get worse before getting better.

Oh yeah, they are. That was a big hit for the government too, ex-president Lula stated that being downgraded to junk by S&P was meaningless, so a newspaper in São Paulo republished all of the exalted speeches he gave when Brazil attained Investment Grade. It’d be hilarious if it wasn’t sad...
