For the last week and a half, I’ve been looking for a cheap ass Mustang project. Mostly, I’ve been looking at 67-68 coupes and Foxes.

My brain is saying the 67-68 is a better short term investment. I’m buying the car as half project and half big-metal-savings-account. Basically, if I hold onto the money it becomes take out dinners and stuff I don’t need from flea markets... if I buy a car, at least I can turn it back into a sum of money roughly resembling what I paid for it if there’s an emergency.

I’ve been looking outside my comfort zone while staying within my interests. Typically, I’ll look for a car with a good body that needs mechanical help. But I’d like to learn to do body work, so I’m actually looking for a car that needs light to moderate body work and is mechanically sound. This is what I found:

‘87 Mustang GT convertible, 5 speed, hit where you see it. It’s short money, I know fox bodies, and absolute worst case I part it out. It’s something I can’t really get in too much trouble buying, plus it’s far enough inside my budget that it leaves me money to do fun stuff to it.

Hopefully the rear suspension is square and that damage is really just cosmetic...if anything about that looks out of place, I’ll be running from it.

Also, by adding a red Mustang to my driveway, I’d have a red Mustang, white F-150, and my blue P71...because America (by way of Canada).

Be veeeery careful. From the pictures, that thing looks like it’ll need more than just a once over plus they aren’t classics quite yet.

Yeah, no doubt. It’s not an investment so much as a thing that probably isn’t ever going to be worth less than it is now.

Plus, you know how you tend to like the things that were around when you were young? Like I’m sitting here and the 30 year old part of my brain is going “get an early one, they’ll go up in value!” but the 18 year old dumbass part is going “5.0 bro! Remember your 88, bro? Fastest car in the high school parking lot, bro! 5 point bro, bro!”

Oh man. That’s sad. If you do ever come across another sweet deal on one, please do post it here on Oppo!

I am looking for basically the same thing, I am ok with kicking my 2013 Fusion out into the cold for a project car.

1964-68 - Fastback, coupe, convert
1969-73 - Fastback, convert
1987-93 - Hatch, convert

I know the 64-73 is the best bet for a future return on investment, but part of me would love to drive around in a Foxbody. I have loved them since I was a kid. Growing up my parents had a baby blue 1980 hatchback.

Exactly my thought. From an investment standpoint, yeah, the earlier cars are better...but for what I want to do, and for my personal nostalgia having owned four of them, a Fox would probably be better for me.

I totally agree, the Fox just has everything I am looking for at a better price. I feel that when I am older and have better cash flow, I will look into getting my 1969 Mach 1. But until then a hatchback Fox will do just fine for my need to wrench on something and have a toy to play with.
