is having labor day sales. My charger project will need a new gauge cluster so I could now buy a pile of gauges. The old gauge cluster has spent ourdoors ~20 years so it isn’t doing very well and my new powertrain is incompatible with the most of them anyway. And a roll bar is going to pass through the dash where the left corner of the gauge cluster should be so I couldn’t keep the gauge cluster intact even if I would have a nice one.
My favorite gauge brand is Stack but I cannot afford to buy a big pile of Stack gauges. Speedhut’s gauges could be customized but even the standard version Revolution gauges look really nice. So I could get a set of those.
My gauges have to be metric as I’m not fluent understanding imperial units. I also would like to have a lambda gauge instead of air/fuel ratio as E85 ethanol concentration isn’t always the same here and that would mess up the reading. My dash originally had 4 small and 2 large gauges. If I move all switches elsewhere I might be able to fit 2 large ones and 5-6 small ones or 3 medium ones and 4 small ones. One option is of course to move some of the gauges away from the main gauge cluster.
I cannot decide what should I get. The speedometer and tachometer are naturally important but even they have some options. Here are the candidates:
-200 km/h speedo with odometer 3-3/8” (odometer would be nice)
-200 km/h speedo without odometer 2-1/16”
-8000 rpm tachometer 3-3/8”, 4” or 4-1/2”
-oil pressure 2-1/16” (important)
-oil temp 2-1/16” (important)
-water temp 2-1/16” (important)
-fuel level 2-1/16” (important)
-fuel pressure 2-1/16” (nice to have)
-lambda 2-1/16” (nice to have)
-boost pressure 2-1/16” (nice to have)
-EGT 2-1/16” (nice to have)
-clock 2-1/16” (I probably don’t need a clock but it is the cheapest gauge)
Any suggestions from Oppo? Most instruments are only to make sure that everything is going fine. I can set the air/fuel ratio and boost pressure during the engine mapping so monitoring them isn’t necessarily useful. An EGT gauge would useful finding failed injectors. A fuel level gauge could be replaced with a jerry can but isn’t very convinient idea. The fuel pressure would tell me when my pump is giving up. The Speedhut gauges aren’t terribly expensive but a big pile of gauges is still worth large amount of money.
If I cannot decide this today is’t not a problem as my project might see another labor day before it moves with its own power...
The gauge cluster in ‘69 Charger looks like this. The small gauges are a bit smaller than the standard 2-1/16” gauges.
The Speedhut gauges that I’m looking for look like this. I couldn’t find a group picture with the correct units.
