I have the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for four years now. I knew right from the start that she will eventually need metal work, but kept postponing the deed, for monetary reasons. That has ended today, as she is now at the body shop.

Kinja'd!!!

I’m ashamed of myself for the disrepair the postponing caused, but I had my reasons. And I believe the good people at the shop can make her look better, than she was when i bought her. Dismantling some of the carpets revealed what i always knew: she has had her rear fenders done once already, but in a pretty shitty quality, so lets hope this one ends with a car in better shape than the one i bought four years ago.

Fingers crossed, purse open.

How much of a mess was that floorboard? When I pulled my carpet back, I was surprised to find holed big enough for my foot to go through, and that’s on a Florida car.

OMG red AW11! I nearly pooped myself when I walked into my local Toyota dealership last month to look at an NA Miata they had, and in the showroom was a PRISTINE white AW11. But automatic! If it had been manual, I’m pretty convinced I would have driven off with it.

How do you like the AW11? How long have you had it? I’ve never actually driven one, but they stuck in my head from the 80s and the “cheap little mid-engine sports car” concept is so great.

Don’t know yet. I’m hoping the floor is good, because it seems so, but of course you never can be sure.

I have written a lot about the AW11, go read that review. Basically it’s a great car, everything you would hope it to be. You need to put good rubber on it, and keep everything in order, and that’s it, you will grin all the time driving on the ragged edge.

One thing of note is that the USDM version lacks the rear anti-roll bar after 1986, I don’t know why, but that may be the reason it has a reputation for snap oversteer. My German-spec girl never rotated on me, and believe me I pushed it very hard.

Because they are still relatively cheap to buy and upkeep, but should be also pretty easy to re-sell, I would say find an example that isn’t rusting (=has been done already, they all rust of course), and buy it.

Adding the rear sway bar on later models is really easy, too. I highly recommend it. I put one on my ‘89, and it’s way less snappy now.

Ah, I saw that last week, I didn’t put it together that it was you. Wonderful review and videos! Good luck with your body work. I think I’m a little too faint of heart to take on a rust case, so I’ll be keeping the radar open for someone’s summer queen.

Yes of course a summer queen is an even better idea, it’s only that if you find a nice, garaged, basically pristine example, you most likely will not have the willpower to really push it hard. So if you want to drive it fast, you might be better off with something that isn’t concourse-grade :-) But to each their own, and you can’t really go wrong with this, I guess.
