Martin Milner, who became known to the US in the 1960s with TV show Route 66 , passed away today. He was 83. Milner tooled around the American West with co-star George Maharis in a succession of Vettes, and brought the American car culture into our homes. He followed that show with a stint as the veteran LAPD sergeant Pete Malloy, teaching his rookie partner Jim Reed (Kent McCord) the way of the streets in Adam-12 . I was too young for Route 66 , but I grew up watching Adam-12 , and while it was a somewhat sanitized view of the world for the home audience, and definitely pro-police, it taught a generation of kids their 10 codes, and made cops look a whole lot more human.
On a personal note, I met them both at an auto show back in the early ‘70s, and used to have an autographed head shot of Kent McCord. Heaven only knows where that is now.

I was too young for Route 66 too, but I loved Adam 12. You could really tell that it was a Jack Webb production because it had the same feel as Dragnet, though the dialog was less stilted than Dragnet. Add in Emergency and you had the trifecta. BTW Emergency starred Bobby Troup who wrote the song Get Your Kicks on Route 66.

I was also a big
Emergency!
fan, and I had no idea Troup wrote that song. I remember Troup from that show, as well as
M*A*S*H
(the movie) where he played the Army driver who’s only line was, “God damned Army!” Most, if not all, of
Emergency!
is available on Netflix, and I watched a few episodes with my son a while ago. He really enjoyed it, and I think one of the reasons is that while it was fairly reaistic, it wasn’t hyper-realistic and gory like so many of the shows today. You got a chance to learn about what firefighters do on a daily basis, but it’s not over the top with blood and guts and violence and sex.

I actually got into Adam-12 earlier this summer until they pulled it from Netflix. Great actor and a great man. And a pretty good cop too.

Yeah, that surprised me when I learned about it too. I was also surprised to learn that Nurse McCall (Julie London) was married to Bobby Troup and was a fairly well known singer back in the day.

Well, the hits keep coming. I didn’t know that, either. Can’t say I’m crazy about this arrangement of
Fly Me To The Moon
, though.

I’ll co-sign on that.

Hmmm, not so sure about that one either. She sounds a bit like a lounge singer who is trying way too hard. I actually preferred the Doris Day recording that auto-played after the London version.
