I realize this is a huge thing, and I do have a tendency to be very spontaneous, but rest assured it’s something I’ve been looking into for years; I only now decided to try to ask you all. :P
Basically, there are two problems with the Peace Corps (which, aside from those, is something I have been hoping to do for years now) for me:
For one thing, nearly everything requires a college degree. I don’t have one, and due to certain circumstances that I don’t want to talk about (although I did mention them here last year, if you really need to know) I won’t likely have one for another 5 or 6 years, at minimum. And that’s assuming I ever do finish; I would like to, but I’m still struggling to work around this situation and I may have to give up if I keep building up debt without making any progress. (Thanks, America)
Second, and most important, is the fact that they station their volunteers alone. Very few of their projects overlap, and it’s just not as social as I’d want it to be. Obviously I’m not expecting to just get a free two-year vacation in Morocco, and I do realize that I won’t literally be alone and I’d certainly make friends with some of the locals, but there’s just a lot of comfort in living/working with at least one or two other people who are fluent in English and also brand new to the country.
So what I’m looking for is a long-term (not necessarily years long, but at least like 6 months or something) volunteer opportunity, local or global, that will accept someone without a college degree and will station its volunteers in groups, even just pairs.
Apparently my dad’s friend did something for the National Parks Service that involved spending a year living with 100-or-so other volunteers in one of the parks, but I can’t seem to find any info on any program like that, and he’s not sure what it was called or if it even still exists. So if you know what that was, assuming it doesn’t require a college degree, that would be excellent. Otherwise, what else is there?
Feel free to share this to any other sub-blogs that you think will have some experienced authors who can give me some good recommendations.

I wanted to to do this. Look into the CCC http://www.ccc.ca.gov/Pages/default.… (like your dad’s friend’s parks service work.)

Military service ... also can fix the money for college issue. Don’t get shot. Or become a Mormon, they always travel in pairs. Also don’t get shot.
I'll take 911 RS for $5000

I’m wondering at the NGO’s (Non Governmental Organizations) - there’s a lot of them, in a lot of places, with a lotta people and missions. Maybe start sifting in that direction?
Also, as one other person here mentioned, don’t get shot. A little training before going could be a good investment.

My wife did Americorps for two years with Habitat for Humanity in Detroit and loved it. They even gave her money afterward to go toward college classes. There is a stipend, but it’s about enough to pay for rent and either food or gas.
