In crossover, concept teaser form.
In all its shame.
Hey Nissan.

You can really tell that Nissan wants so, so badly to be edgy with their recent designs, but their mom won’t let them. It doesn’t help that their recent crop of designs look like something that kid from high school that wore Naruto headbands would have in his secret black notebook labeled “Art/poetry SECRET” in between poorly sketched pentagrams and attempts at drawing themselves as a Sonic the Hedgehog character. They get a gold star for effort, now take away their pencil before they try to do it again.

What I’ve noticed lately is that most Japanese car companies (apart from most Mazdas and subarus) have started to make the same mistakes the Americans did in the malaise era; they’ve become complacent with their success, and rely on their image to sell cars, and as a result, a lot of their lineups are either ugly and overstyled or zero fun to drive; I may be wrong; the new Z might be a brilliant to drive, styling masterpiece, but this teaser doesn't paint a brilliant picture

That’s not what hurt american companies in the malaise era. That had to do with outdated construction techniques, corporate bureaucracy and infighting, a lack of quality control and inability to conform to new regulations using existing technology at the time. Most of those things aren’t the case with Japanese car companies right now.

Thanks! The 1970’s American auto industry isn’t exactly my area of expertise; I always figured it was a combination of new regulations (which I guess you could argue have negative impacts on cars today) and American companies relying on their previous success building cars and not being able to keep up with foreign completion. Thanks for correcting me; I'm now off to read Wikipedia articles on the Chevrolet Monza or something so I can talk about this stuff without making a fool of myself

1: I wouldn’t mind an AWD Sport Coupe Crossover.
2: Such a thing would not be a Fairlady Z.
A versatile platform, like the one that underpins the 370Z, Infiniti Coupe and most of Infiniti’s other longitudinal non-truck products, including FX and EX could spawn both vehicles.
But they would be, and should absolutely be separate vehicles. Z is a 2+0 or optional 2+2 affordable performance car. That is what it needs to stay, and it’s styling needs to comeback from whatever neverland it has gone to.
A crossover coupe with 6-8 inches of ground clearance, and ATESSA AWD could be very cool, and much better than the impractical JOKE, er... Juke that Nissan has played on the automotive industry.
But if anything, it should be an XZ, or something... not a Z. ZX was an up-optioned Z. XZ could be a crossover-Z... as long as it doesn’t take the place of the ACTUAL Z car.
An AWD, moderate-height coupe could be great fun for the snow-belt.

I think they go hand in hand. I heard an expression it was something like
“you never count change when you have a $20.’ Until 1980 the big 3 still had @85 of the us market.

I think some of those mistakes stand out in particular. They aren’t fun to drive because people don’t want fun - that’s not a mistake. But they definitely are over-styled, something the Americans are often guilty of.
Mazda do a great job. The current crop of SUVs are mostly hideous, but Mazda’s designs always stand out to me as simple and awesome.
