In what can only be described as a highly controversial move, the Japanese engine supplier for the McLaren-Honda Formula 1 team is replacing the turbos on the cars with hamsters. More after the jump.

When asked for comments Honda F1 chief Yasuhisa Arai stated:

We think this change will greatly increase the power output of the Honda F1 engine. We experienced a gain of about 60 BhP (brake hamsterpower) on the dyno during testing and expect to see this translated to higher performance on the track.

As an added bonus to the performance gain, the Honda F1 chief also lists a higher squeakier engine note. Something F1 one fans have been asking for ever since the move towards the current v6 engines. During the interview the Japanese F1 chief hinted towards the possible future use of electric eels as a replacement for the ERS units.

Other teams are currently protesting to the FIA but have yet to find a clause excluding the use of hamsters in the current rule book.

Bernie Ecclestone is said to welcome this development as it “brings the sport closer to a more sustainable and green future.”

The decision has been met with outcries from various animal welfare organisations worldwide but Arai is assuring everyone the hamsters are treated far more humanely than say, F1 test drivers.

Honestly this can be both a satirical article and also deeply serious and true. I’m so torn.
