Sorting through my collection of 1970s Road & Track issues, comparing all the old hatchbacks it’s amazing how similar most of them were in terms of performance/size/weight/price. Le Car was a surprisingly tough model to beat.
A Honda Civic was cheaper - but got worse gas mileage. A Datsun F10 cost the same and was slightly bigger - but was incredibly ugly. What were you going to do? Buy a VW Rabbit? Too expensive. The Tercel wouldn’t arrive until 1979, and oddly enough has the exact same skid pad figures as the Renault.
Also all of these cars took about 19-20 seconds to cover the quarter mile.
