The fact that it’s a 200k plus mile Cadillac that has a Northstar engine, rapidly losing coolant, and the fact that it’s “6 Cylinders” means it’s blown two headgaskets in its life means that you’re playing a dangerous game my friend. As a general rule of thumb, any 90s Cadillac that has got over 100k on the Odo and no service records to back it up means you will be getting engine trouble, as the Northstars were fickle and trouble prone unless you did the kind of maintenance that would be expected of European cars of a similar era. That’s not even counting if it still has electronic air suspension and whether its gone out or not.

Personally, if you want a big Caddie from the 90s, a RWD 93-96 Fleetwood will serve you better. As the LT1 is probably the better engine for high mileage examples, and it isn’t as techno-heavy.

All of this is just what I've read though, you'll have to ask Ben Rolland more, he knows a shit-ton more about these than me.

I’d hazard a guess that this is a ticking time bomb, unless it has a comprehensive and thorough service history. I’m not sure about the differences between American and Canadian models, but I believe that as a Deville Concours, which had a V8, not a V6, and a self-grenading Northstar V8 at that, which, IME, leak oil like a sieve.

Avoid. You can do better. Get a Panther or a Roadmaster/Impala/Caprice if you want a ‘90s boat.

I remember a friend’s dad in high school needed a full rebuild on his STS at 70,000 miles. Durability and Northstar do not belong in the same sentence, unless you add “does not have”.

I'm glad to hear that, I need reasons to not buy it haha. I'd be a lot more comfortable with an LT1 and rwd. I knew the northstars didn't have that great a rep, but it's too bad, they sound great

Yeah I've been looking at caprices and panthers too...looking for something totally different than the bmws I've been buying. Thank you for helping talk me out of it haha

I have a 98 Eldorado for what it’s worth, and it is a fantastic engine. It makes a great sound, it causes the car to move like stink, it’s unbelievably smooth, it is a brilliant engine. It’s a shame that it’s not as indestructible as something like the classic 368 engine, in fact I already have contingency plans to replace it should the worst come and my car has only 82000 on the Odometer.

Still, I'll enjoy it for as long as it will run.

Wow that's low mileage. That reminds me of a mechanic I know with a 190E 2.6 with 80,000kms on it....he keeps trying to sell it to me, and it's very tempting, low mileage stuff like that is hard to come by

If you want reasons not to buy it, don't consult Benjamin Rolland.

2003 and up N*s are actually pretty bulletproof if you’re crazy about maintenance (both standard and preventative). This is not that. I wouldn’t pay more than $600. Although, with new head gaskets and a Northstar performance stud kit, and you can have a pretty decent sport boat. The Concurs was sort of a DTS before the DTS but after the original DTS, but that’s a story for another day.

No! No no no no no!!!!

This is not the take all your abuse and ask for more 4.3 in your Blazer. This is an already on it’s deathbed Northstar. And it’s also the ugliest generation generation of Deville, IMO.

They’re freakishly expensive where I live, I’ve never seen one for less than $7000, and it was a ruined one. I think a Crown Vic is in my future, I've been wanting one for boat duty for a while

Yeah, I've gotten enough terrified responses that I definitely won't be buying it haha. I almost wanted it because it's not good looking, but yeah I'll just get a boat that's actually good. Once my blazer is doing a little better :p

A cheap old car can be one of the most expensive cars you’ll ever own.
