we’re considering trading the WRX and Escape in for a Flex. I think we’re rushing it. I really dont want to get rid of the WRX. I dont get to drive it much at all now with having a work truck and it just sits there. My wife’s Escape gets driven a lot and is only getting older. We considered only owning one car but I think that would be a nightmare since I cant drive my work vehicle for personal stuff. They offerd me $24k for the WRX and $4500 for the Escape.

We test drove this:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

it was nice. not overly thrilling but decent.

then there is this, which i like the newer style better but i hate owning a black car

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

If I had something to replace the WRX it might be easier to part with... neither of which my wife approves of

any suggestions on what to replace the WRX with? closer to 02339 the better, ideally $4k or lower. I can kinda fix stuff but would rather it be something that runs well coming home.

There has to be a cheaper Ford Flex in your area or within a reasonable distance. She gets the Flex and you have a larger budget to play with for your replacement! :D

I’m looking at upgrading to something similar as well just to have the option of the third row on occasion for my wife’s driver. Surprised to see that the flex, cx9,and the Durango are an inch bigger than a sienna minivan. The pilot, highlander, and explorer are smaller by 2-6 inches. Just an FYI, as we were thinking “don’t want something quite as big as a mini van, let’s look at that”. Nope, bigger.

Selling both the WRX and the Escape gives you a total of 30k give or take. Which means you can get both this:

And any other vehicle for $15,000 for your wife, like a Mazda 5 Sport, or a 2008 low mileage ford Explorer, or a Hyundai Vera Cruz or a Kia Borrego.

I will say this - saw a Flex today on my drive from NYC to MD. The square shape means you can fit more stuff in it, if that’s what you need. Ultimately, you have to be comfortable spending time behind the wheel. Like the Volt I rented today. More on that later ....

We sometimes travel with 5 or me people. With two car seats is pretty uncomfortable for the 5th and 6 means a second car. My wife also wants a 3rd kid soon

The answer is Expedition or Suburban, if you can afford the gas. Or a minivan with a 3rd row. Or a Tesla with the 3rd seat if you have the money.

Have you looked at Foresters or Outbacks at all? AWD and decent space for kids and stuff. Plus they’re safe vehicles;.

I would still highly recommend the Flex, as you know. Not a car you’re likely to get overly emotionally attached to, but a darn good family workhorse.

The world doesn't need more people. As a father of two and a former WRX owner, keep the Subie and don't have another kid.

I wouldn’t be too worried about selling the WRX... you’d just have to change your Kinja handle to “Opposaurus Flex!”

Why doesn’t your wife just take the WRX sometimes. Keeps it from drying up and will share the load with her beater.

...

I just saw your post saying 2+ kids and the need for 6 seats. What about an AWD Sienna van? They are super spacious, drive pretty well, and can also do Home Depot runs like a boss. If we had a 4th kid, a Sienna would replace the Passat as our family car.

If there are any Flex ecoboost trims around you, I highly recommend a test. The flex with the twin turbo 3.5 is such a sleeper! It’s my most favorite application of the engine, just because you would never expect a toaster box to rocket off the line like it does. Also just maybe it would slightly fill the void of a missing turbo boxer.

Weird, I’ve been thinking about selling my mr2 to pay off the TL so I can trade it in on a Flex...

I'd be asking moe than $4k though!

Oh well that stinks. I think the Flex could be a good option then.
