Then you wouldn’t even need that GTr :) How about a P85D and something a little more “truckish” - maybe a King Ranch F450 Powerstroke?

Nice. I’ve heard the Volt is actually quite a decent car. As far as the GT-R, are you considering DBAs or CBAs?

Yeah, I’ve heard the same of the Volt.

I haven’t really gotten too much into the intricacies of the GTR because I’m still a student and money like that is still a ways off. Don’t know if I’ll ever own a GTR but it’s on a poster over my bed for the past 6 years so a man can dream.

I’m guessing the CBA is the pre 2012 and then the DBA is the post 2012. In that case.... what advantage does the CBA have over the DBA?

Which hatch would you choose?

That’s why I find the GT-R fascinating. From some angles it just seems odd and ungainly. However, sometimes the design just seems to come to together to make something impressive. While it will never be referred to as an achingly beautiful vehicle, I do think it has some very intriguing lines.

Well, it’s always good to have something to motivate you each day. I’m sure as long as you keep working hard you’ll get there sooner than you think. I wish you all the best in the future.

You are exactly correct about the model years. As far as the differences between them, it’s a lot of little things including bigger brakes, refined suspension, larger turbo inlets, front bumper, wheels, interior pieces, chassis bracing, transmission programing, etc. So, essentially no one major difference but a lot of little tweaks which add up to a much better car overall.

Good afternoon, my friend.

What a delightful find. I would be honored to hold on to it for a few years but unfortunately the wife would probably divorce me if I brought home another car (especially this year). Haha.

I’m doing wonderful. Thank you for asking. How are you and the family?

I know this dilemma. I also could not convince my wife that she needed to trade in her daily for this blue beauty.

I’m doing very well. I went through an office closure this summer (Apache closed its Tulsa office), but was very fortunate to have three offers to choose from. Instead of going with another large corporation (WPX), I chose a start-up, where I was able to get some real equity in the company. It’s just 11 of us, and is a great team. Great to feel valuable and efficient after feeling like I was getting stagnant at my old job.

The kids are great, doing well in school and enjoying soccer and now cross-country. We’ve been cheering on our Cards and Royals (both down 2-1 at the moment). This evening, they rode bikes and we had a fire, and then snuck in a game of Go Fish after Mrs. addiction got back from book club.

Soaking it up; trying to make every minute count!

Haha. Well, I’m sure that if she is anything like my wife, you know how to eventually persuade her to allow you to purchase something you really desire.

I’m sorry to hear about your office closure but am thrilled that you were able to land in, what sounds like, an even better position. One of the most challenging issues I’ve dealt with other the years is how to insure that once a company starts growing quite large that it continues to ensure that its employees remain engaged and feel needed. I’ve always found it fascinating how young entrepreneurs are always emphasizing how their companies need to get larger and larger. When I hear this, I always have to softly chuckle to myself and end up thinking, “Be careful what you wish for.” Growing big may lead to increased profits but it will also definitely lead to issues you may have never even considered. So often, I run into managers in varying stages of their careers who are employed by companies of all sizes and they always want to gloat about the same old things (primarily how much their department brought in). However, if you ask them to tell you about those that they are employed to manage and support, they sadly can only list qualities or accomplishments directly related to their departments’ work. Now, if asked, many will say that anything else is not relevant to the job at hand and is therefore unnecessary. While they are technically correct in that a job description will never say “must show genuine interest in those he/she manages,” I would argue they really should. It’s easy to start viewing those under you as machines who you just give directions to and ensure that they come up with results of a desired standard. However, we all need to step back from time to time and realize that those who we work with, work for, or manage are not machines but humans with feelings, emotions, desires, hopes, dreams, goals, etc. They need to be shown respect and we should always be working to not only help them succeed and do their best work possible but do our best to ensure that they genuinely enjoy coming to work. Now, does this mean having pizza parties everyday or giving them every Friday off? No. It means understanding that if one of our employees enjoys attending his or her son’s varsity football games on Fridays, then we make arrangements for him or her to leave work early on those days by allowing him or her to come in early on one or two of the previous days, working on Saturday, etc. In short, don’t make work an unnecessarily difficult thing. However, the only way we can accomplish this is by actually talking to our fellow employees and getting to know them on a deeper level. I’m not saying that those that we work with, work for, or manage should be our absolute best friend in the world (I would actually argue that you should never be friends with your fellow employees especially those under your guidance but that’s a discussion for another day), I’m saying we should make an effort to get to know them on a deeper level than “what can they do to make this company and myself look good.” I guarantee that even the most anti-social, hermit-like person will appreciate our efforts, even if they don’t show it or express it verbally. Sorry for going off on a tangent (my wife claims I should do college lectures because then I might actually find a few people who enjoy listening to my long-winded speeches) but this truly is a phenomenon that I run into, unfortunately, all too often.

I’m happy to hear that your children are excelling in school and athletics alike. Also, I’m overjoyed that you and your wife are making particular efforts to spend time with them as much as possible. They grow up so fast and you would be surprised at how much they will cherish those moments later in life.

As for sports, my team (Rangers) were just eliminated and I’m stuck rooting of the Astros. Also, to make matters worse, I never though I’d want to see Romo back on the field as badly as I do now.

Anyway, I hope the rest of your week is very productive and enjoyable and I’m sorry that I didn’t reply to you earlier but work has been a bit taxing the last few days.

I have to give her credit - she did encourage me to buy one of my attainable dream cars a few years ago (my E90 M3), and then went a step further and was very supportive of me taking it out to the track. The two of us are taking a driving trip to the Ozarks of Arkansas and southern Missouri next weekend. She’s never been to Eureka Springs; should be a great time.

Thanks for the great insight as an owner/manager. It sounds like you’d be a great boss to work for! As someone who values family so highly, having a manager who keeps these things in mind while asking of my time is very valuable. Thankfully, my current manager and our CEO are both understanding and flexible when it comes to these things. I think you should give talks - maybe you can do one at a TED conference someday and reach many thousands with this sage advice. Many managers (and employees) could benefit from it.

Sorry about the Rangers. Maybe my wife’s Royals can put the Blue Jays in their place - ha! That’s hilarious about Romo. I’m a Chiefs fan, so I’m also suffering through this season as well.

Always great chatting with you. I’m off with the kids tomorrow for the last day of their fall break. Sounds like we might be camping in the backyard tonight. Hopefully we can make some good memories... Enjoy your weekend.

That sounds terrific. I hope you both have a wonderful time.

Well, it’s a constant learning process and you just have to keep an open mind and be willing to change when it’s the right thing to do, even if it is difficult from time to time. Also, I’ve been at it for a while now so you would hope I’ve learned a thing or two. Haha.

I’m glad your new job seems to understand these principles.

Haha. I appreciate the kind words, my friend, but my ramblings are far from “sage” worthy. They are simply the culmination of practices and a mindset that I’ve used over the years that seems to have been well accepted by those I’ve been lucky enough to work with.

Concerning TED talks, it’s definitely something to consider if they’d be willing to have me.

Oh well that’s just how sports go sometimes. They can bring up unbelievable joy but also deep sorrow. As for the Chiefs, I’m sorry about Charles’ injury. He’s a truly special player and seemingly decent person.

The pleasure is all mine, my friend. Have a wonderful time.

Thanks. Making plans to visit the Crystal Bridges museum http://crystalbridges.org/ and the Thorncrown Chapel http://www.thorncrown.com/ along the way.

While you might think these thoughts are nothing special, I’d argue, sadly, that you’re in the minority of managers and business owners by treating your employees this way, and going out of your way to learn enough about them to find ways to make them happier in their role.

Thanks for mentioning Charles. He’s endured some hard things in his life, but always manages to stay positive. If you’ve never watched the E:60 about him, it’s worth your time. https://youtu.be/g8scKjJSktw

Wow. If you like it, let me know as the wife and I might need to explore Arkansas a bit more.

Well, I always engage with upper management whenever I’m considering a merger or acquisition to see how they currently handle their employees and whether they seem to be open to change, among other things of course. Hopefully, more people over time will come to realize that treating employees in a courteous manner will not only make them more productive but also loyal to their company, not to mention that it’s just the right thing to do period.

I’ve haven’t seen this, I’ll definitely have to watch it tonight.

Reporting back! Crystal Bridges was fantastic - definitely worth your time. Found a place that evening in Eureka Springs to eat some good food, drink some good beers, and watch the Royals win (Sparky’s). Saturday morning was a little wet and foggy, but we still had a long, fun drive through the fall leaves and then had lunch at the Cliff House http://www.cliffhouseinnar.com/ . From there, we headed up to Branson. Mrs. addiction enjoyed shopping at the Landing and the older shops up the road from there, and we had great meal at Cantina Laredo. Sunday morning we met up with some friends for breakfast and then, having had our fill of Branson, we headed back to Eureka Springs to walk around downtown. Was a beautiful day for it. Got lots of Christmas shopping done, had a nice lunch at a little place called DeVito’s, and then headed for home. Great weekend overall; can’t wait to head back that way soon.

He loves it so far. It’s decently comfortable, fast, sounds fabulous. He said that most of the stuff people complain about are exactly the compromises you make for a good sports car for. On another note, we averaged 25.2 MPG while driving around on the highway and city with a fair amount of flogging, so that’s not half bad. The only thing is the gas tank is TINY, something like 10 gallons.

And I’ve been good! The shop I’ve been working with that works on Japanese cars is moving to Florida, so that’s not the best, but other than that, it’s all been good.
