Oppo,
I’m not going to bore you with the deets, but my wife and I are looking at 4th Gen 4Runners. Here’s what I want to know:
1) How long has yours (or someone you know) lasted? What has broken or needed replacement?
2) How’s the maintenance on them? I’ve heard they’re pretty bulletproof and from what I’ve seen, they’re easy to work on but I’d like to hear it first hand. Looking at a V6 here
3) How safe are they? We’re having our first child this year and safety is of utmost importance to me.
4) Gas mileage is somewhat important to me, but not if it comes at the expense of maintenance and pains in my butt later. Will I wish I had the GX470 instead? (I still can’t get over that stupid swinging barn door, and giving up the power rear window)
5) If you got rid of yours, what did you trade it for?
Thanks!

Not a 4Runner owner, but I don’t know anyone who has ever had any serious issue with theirs. It seems like these things are damn near unkillable.

4th gens are solid, You have to make sure you get one without X-Rear or the leveling rear suspension and I would (if it were me) get the V8 as the mileage penalty is nothing and its basically due to the added benefit of full time 4wd. With proper maintenance there is no reason that these can’t do 300,000 miles. The V6 is nice because its chain driven cams so you don’t have to worry about timing belts like you do on the V8.
As far as safety, they are pretty solid.
You wont get great mileage, but it wont bankrupt you. expect 17 city 20 highway.

Also, IIRC the V8 doesn’t require premium fuel, but the V6 does.

Well, the V6 recommends it, but it will run fine on regular, you just loose a little power.

Spend the extra money to get the GX if you have the money

Since you’re looking for one, I’m going to assume these are not your dogs in your 4Runner? If I’m correct I’d like to recommend that you require your 4Runner to come with 2 Boston Terriers because they’re the best!

Isn’t the gas mileage penalty like 3mpg between the v6 and v8?

No, not my dogs. I have 1 dog who would be in the back, however ... ^^^ this idiot... but I love him. Here is’s looking like a shaggy junk-yard dog. He’s a Border Collie / Australian Shepherd. About 45lbs

Oh, well F that noise. I’m getting the V8 then. Everything I read said the difference was much greater

My buddy drives one, he gets about 17 city and 20 highway. you CAN get worse mileage, but the V8 works less hard. The hp difference is minimal but the torque difference is HUGE. Our last outing

Great- thanks for the info!
Sounds just like the Trailblazer syndrome. The V6 got worse mileage than the big V8 due to it working much harder

Aww, he’d love the back of a 4Runner, or comprable SUV. What a cutie.

Never owned one but my roommate did, they last for what seems to be forever and can take a beating before they need to be looked at. Maintenance is fairly cheap and the fact that it is a Toyota kinda helps with part availability and support. Pretty sure there are tons of safety info online about it and I would guess it performs at least average for an SUV. It will laugh at you for economy and will drink as much as some of the thirsier trucks. In the end he swapped it out for a newer Highlander.

V8 times 1000. We owned a 2007 v8 for years (and I would still if not for a multi car pileup totaling it).
I have to say, I think it was the best all around vehicle I have ever owned. I’ve had other vehicles I prefer to drive, but the 4runner just did everything well, without breaking and without any drama.
Ours was that champagne color, Sr5, v8, full time 4wd.
