There is no downside. The worst they can do is say, “no”, silence, or maybe “hell, no”, which you can dismiss with a hearty “Fuck you, anyway”. Apply! And good luck. FWIW, I actually count “name brand” schools against applicants, at least for undergrad degrees, and sometimes grad as well.
