Doug’s article and video got me thinking about license plates, because why the hell not, and I decided to ask, what’s the best license plate? My vote would go to the Northwest Territories/former Nunavut plate, because it’s a fucking polar bear.

Not the Maryland license plate. That shit is terrible.

NM is the best its simple bright colors and has USA on it, for all those folks who think were are not part of the US.

“Ft. McHenry: Like Bombs an Shit.”
My parents live in MD and my old car kept the MD tags in AL for about 5 years ($10/year beats $300/yr, and the old “shield” tags were pretty badass).
I honestly think any license plate with a URL is terribly tacky. PA was the first one I ever saw with that, about 10 years ago.

You answered the question

I don’t think anyone can beat a die-cut polar bear. You win.

I always liked this California one for some reason. Maybe because of Out Run?
If not this, I kind of like the Delaware ones too.

Those are cool, but Tennessee used to have its plates shaped like the state itself:
It’s a tough call between the two. As far as I’m aware, they’re the only shaped license plates ever issued anywhere.

^ That is awesome! It’s so basic, is it smaller than other states plates?

This and the old TN plate, already mentioned, are the best. But honorable mention to me goes to Australia - or at least certain states - since the number plates can be in a variety of shapes depending on what plate fits on your car. I couldn’t find a great pic, but you can see several different shapes for Queensland here.

Yep! They also have full-sized ones with gold/beige letters and a matching outline. Not sure whether drivers get to choose between the two or what the deal is.

Not a fan of the turquoise plates to be honest. It did win some plate award when they came out. Plus its missing the USA part LOL

I dunno, I just love that color with the yellow. If I had one, I’d paint that red spot bright pink and hope nobody cares enough to ticket me (if that’s even a violation. After all, it’s not obscuring anything) and that would just be awesome.

Yes, they’re smaller. IIRC, the Governor gets to have the license plate with only the number 1 on it.
The lower number the more expensive they are. People apparently buy low numbered plates for ridiculous sums of money too. http://www.lowdigittags.com/

WOW that is crazy. Those are some serious money for those plates.

This is widely regarded as Indiana’s best plate...too bad they went horrible for so long after these with plain blue plates of boringness...
