My German is Scheiße and the grammar is pretty bad and it is recommend to full the position requirement. I haven’t learned more German since high school and tragically my school defunded it my junior year. The Woodcliff Lake HQ would have been a good internship for me to stay in state. Most of the other posts are for electrical engineers and electronics. Looks like the Bavarians eventually will go full electric on their cars.

God, I’m surprised you don’t need a Doctorate and a Congressional letter of recommendation for an Internship these days...

I like how they state they will not discriminate over disability or national origin, but the job will most likely require you to drive and speak both english and german (something even more uncommon for someone not from German or English speaking countries).

I suppose they are valid qualifications but I have a big problem with the EO employer declaration in general. Eventually we will get to a point in society where people will be able to pick jobs on a first come first serve basis because they’ll claim they were discriminated based on their education stemming from their hometown, race, parents, etc.

Some podunk small engineering firm instate here had more requirements for letter of recommendations than the BMW and gov agencies (you know the one with the rockets, and running on less than a penny per government funding).

If companies could remember it’s JUST an internship, that’d be great.

I mean, I’m 7+ years into my career field now (And in charge of my department, reporting only to the CEO and President) and I still think it’s ridiculous.

Bingo, you’re on topic with the discrimination getting a little out of hand. I’ve seen it in the admissions process at school. Usually the application is severely lacking in academics but plays the hometown/race/income card. Once they usually get in these freshman are lazy and lower the ranking of our school. I can’t get angry at the German requirement only at the fact I half ass speak it and that my hs cut the funding. My only option is using the campus rosetta stone program offered by tuition.

I’m surprised - well, slightly surprised - that a company who operate internationally would need an employee outside Germany to be able to speak and write German as many international companies use English as a common language for their multinational staff. Then again I suppose it’s the senior levels who work in English and the lower level staff in Germany who you would actually be dealing with would use German on a daily basis.

I work for a German automotive parts manufacturer, and can promise that if you ever want to work for a major German auto company and move up the ladder you will need to learn German. They give major preference to German speaking employees, which somewhat makes sense. If you show enough promise they will sometimes pay for language courses, but it’s a better idea to get a jump start of it on your own.

Since I started my job I’ve bought software, similar to Rosetta Stone, to begin teaching myself. But if I ever want to work for my dream company, Toyota Motorsports GmbH, I probably should enroll in some courses too.

If you are serious about wanting to work for a German company, I highly recommend adding it as a minor or something.

All that being said, apply anyway. Job/internship requirements are almost always overstated, which makes the process of job hunting the most depressing thing ever. Seems like every entry level job I looked at after school said it requires at least 2 years of experience, but how the hell are you supposed to get that if you can’t get into the entry level jobs?! Then I discovered that companies mainly put those descriptions in to bring in the most skilled and motivated applicants, but it doesn’t necessarily mean they won’t accept someone who doesn’t exactly meet the requirements. Having a slight grasp of the German language might honestly be enough for you. Worst they can do is say no.

When MBUSA was in New Jersey, they had no language requirement on their posting. I didn’t care for MB since they lobbied to change the import rules here in the USA. The dealer network lost money to grey market import Benzes.

No German offered on my campus nor the nearby schools offer it. I’m almost close to a math minor two more classes to fullfill it if I choose so.

Ah, gotchya. Then it sounds like working with some software is your best bet, or possibly find a private tutor if you’re really serious about it. Like I said though, apply anyway. You may still get the position. If you don’t, you’ve at least show interest and they will likely remember that/you if another internship or position opens up.

Definitely something I should look into when looking for internships this upcoming semester. I may not be fluent in German but I am at least confident I have a real good understanding of the language. Where did you find this by the way?

How many letters do you need?

The most I’ve seen was six, which is bad but still doable.

Just lie and then study real hard for a bit in case it comes up during the interview.

Don’t say you’re fluent; say you have a “working proficiency”.

Roughly five for the unnamed podunk engineering form. Less for the other places I’ve looked at.

Don’t be afraid to go way back and ask HS teachers/coaches. A lot of the time people will just ask you to provide them with a working draft of the letter, anyway.

At least you don't have to get background checked....

I didn’t burn too many bridges with the teachers at my hs teachers and track/xc coach, only with the music dept. That’s another story. I’m fairly friendly with a teacher who worked at bell labs.

You bet. I’m going to gather up links where I can to make the search easier when I get more serious about interning somewhere.
