Kids these days, not children, college kids. I was working just off campus at a University in the neighboring state of Illinois and this parking system was installed instead of a traditional drive in garage.

I was on one of the 3 garage floors and counted 80 parking trays on that level. Talk was they were able to save enough space in this route over a traditional garage and were able to add 2 floors of living space in this brand new $40 million student housing facility.

That’s awesome! Until, I guess, you read the following sign:

Management cannot be held responsible for vehicle damage howsoever caused, including because our robots went nuts and chucked your car off the roof.

Ah, but as Steve Lehto says, just because they say they can’t be held responsible for shit happening, doesn’t mean the same will hold up when taken to court! Or something like that.

My cynical side wanted to scoff at this, but it actually seems really clever and well thought out. I appreciate the “Aside from our twist that makes it better, we’re using standard, reliable stuff” statement. Minimizing the “never been done before” goes a long way towards making something work.

Parking garages are a massive pain to design, there’s so much wasted space in even the most efficient ones. This is pretty neat.

A few months ago I parked in a garage in NYC that might have used something like this. I really have no idea. All I know is that my car disappeared into an elevator. I'd love to know where it went or what happened to it after I left, but I felt in pretty okay company because there was a guy in a Maserati that pulled up after me. If it's okay for him, it's okay for my Civic.

I hope that there are backup generators in place in the event of a power outage.

This is extremely cool! I would love to see this style garage implemented in many places, it makes so much sense.

How do the robots charge? Is it a large scale wireless, contact based charging system similar to the ones sold by Ikea and others? I haven’t been to the website to check so if I haven’t seen it or missed it, forgive me.

There were a couple charging stations on each floor I think where the robot backs up to it to make contact. I just noticed the “charging station” on the wall with contacts attached to the ground. Like a box but with the two metal contacts exposed.
