How many oppos have catalytic converters on their daily? I live in FL, so my cats have been donated to the strange eastern europeans who pay cash for them.

Who else is free flowing on here?

My DD is loldiesel. Other than that, my other cars are from the 60s, so... cats. Yeah.

I live in Vermont where they have emissions tests, so mine are intact and functional. I would have them anyways because I’m a bit of a hippie, which comes full circle as to why I’m living in Vermont.

i live in Nj...where a car with broken headlights, no airbags, and thats falling apart is totally safe, but a car with no cat converter is illegal.

That being said, I’ve played with the idea of just swapping out a straight pipe after i get it inspected

I am all for being green, but with stock cams and a proper tune, cars dont release the raw fuel that cats were designed to replace. Monitor your O2 sensors to save the trees, or to save gas in my case

Me. It’s illegal in Brazil, but we’ve gotten to a point where laws are more like suggestions than actual rules, so why bother?

Yes, you can tune out the hydrocarbon issues, but you will still have NOx and CO emissions. Short of replacing your intake with bottled oxygen, you cannot get around the NOx, and I think CO generation is unavoidable.

On a side note, I’ve always wondered how much power you could make if you ran an ICE off pure bottled O2 at 1 atm.

It’s illegal in the US, too.

Kinja'd!!!2

ummmmmmmm, I do.

Removing the cat is illegal and pointless. You cannot remove one for any reason other than its immediate replacement, and even then, only when it fails or suffers physical damage. If somehow you purchased the car without one, you may install a cat.

Even in states with no inspection, it’s still illegal. The law that prohibits the removal is federal and applies in all 50 states.

Unless you are stuck behind an older Toyota going up a hill. Many ‘90s Toyotas sold outside of California had California-spec emissions control systems equipped. This was when it was in the cards for everyone to switch to gasoline with lower sulfur content. That didn’t happen, and as a result, those ‘90s Toyotas smell like rotten eggs when under load.

(We had a 99 Camry with California-spec emissions in PA, and fixed the smell when the OEM catalytic converter finally died and was replaced with a universal part)

I also live in Florida, but I wouldn’t. There aren’t many performance gains to be had in doing it with my Tundra, and there are reasons these laws are on the books in other states. Just because we don’t inspect for it here in Florida, doesn’t mean purposely disable or remove parts that help reduce cancer rates, keep the air clean, and contribute less to man made climate change.

With the cats I have a vehicle with almost 400 bhp and rates as a low emission vehicle (LEV). With out them I have an inappreciable gain in power and I’m emitting literally tons of poisonous, cancerous air that I too will breath in.

There are certainly cat-less vehicles that I love to see on the road on a Sunday drive, but to purposely remove it from a car, especially your DD, is just inconsiderate.

I have cats on my Ranger. Even though I’m the one that inspects the truck, they do have to be there for it to be legal, which I like my truck to be. Although, ever since I put the new transmission in, there has been a decent exhaust leak on the right bank where the Y-pipe meets the manifold, so there’s that. I have zero intentions of fixing the leak even though I know exactly what it is.

I do.

1.) I live in California.

2.) It’s a 4-cyl Camry with the slushbox. It will do absolutely jack shit for my performance numbers, assuming there are some to begin with anyways. AND YOU DON’T MODIFY A CAMRY.

3.) I legitimately do not give a fuck about doing anything other than regular maintenance to this car. This car is like a shotgun marriage in which I had little to no other choices after somebody stole my old car and I found out I had to commute 60 miles each way. We go about our lives each day, saying little to each other.

Kills RX8 engines, and they are $1500 a pop last about three months. Fuck the law, my car can even pass the sniffer without one, not that it has to. I mean there are certainly reasons to keep one, but the law isn’t a very compelling one, they don’t bother enforcing it in my state.

Kinja'd!!! dogisbadob > CammedCTSV
09/01/2015 at 22:13

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah, but you won’t get any more CFM. This is true for any OBD-II car. Nothing like the pelleted cats from the 70s.

Kinja'd!!! DogonCrook > e36Jeff now drives a ZHP
09/01/2015 at 22:18

Kinja'd!!!0

That’s true, but even without a cat a lot of cars can pass the sniffer test. But unless they are clogging often though there isn’t a very good reason to remove them.

Unless it’s clogging your wasting money on a straight pipe. If you really don’t want one, (you will definitely smell like gas, you will get used to it, but other people won’t) just pop it off and cram a broomstick in there and bust it up. It’s free, and it’s the same gains to within fractions of a percent. But if you don’t tune for it, either way is a waste unless your car has a restrictive design or you swap the entire exhaust system.

He’d likely need to keep the cat around so he can bolt it on to pass the periodic smog inspections.

Possibly, those o2 extensions do work. And in a lot of cars the second sensor is so lenient it’ll never trigger unless you actually do use a midpipe. If it’s a pre 95 or a sniffer state though your right I didn’t think about that.

Edit: and I say it’s better because a proper midpipe can be pretty pricey for just a pipe. But a muffler shop can fix you up cheap, I prefer a resonator so it’s not loud (I don’t like to announce me intentions lol) but if you like the sound it’s not too bad. The generally sound real raspy on 4 bangers though, and can make a v6 sound like a Honda.

My Porsche doesn’t have them, but that’s because it gains quite a few horsepower. Otherwise, I don’t see the point in removing them, it’s better for the environment and modern cats are so free flowing that you probably gain less than a single horsepower.

Not in any car from the past 20 years, it isn’t. There won’t be any less restriction, and there won’t be any added hp, either. Not since the advent of OBD-II

yes there will be less restriction. have you ever seen what a cat looks like inside? its pretty simple physics.

OBD-II has nothing to do with it. it uses o2 sensor before the cat to change timing and fuel

‘95 F150, ‘94 Century, ‘98 Bonneville. All have their cats. My Ram 50 had a cat from the factory but when I repaired the exhaust (which was damaged by someone trying to cut the cat out of it) I left it out.
