Kinja'd!!!

My wife found it in our back yard. Our chihuahuas were kind of watching out for it. Does anyone know how to take care of one until it heals?

It wasn’t moving at first but now it walks around sort of. It sleeps half an hour then wakes up. She gave it water and a couple drops of milk. We have squirrel food for a feeder. Any clues OPPO?

Now, GIS side views :]

That’s a lot of cars. My foxhound says it looks tasty.

Animal rescue can help. I don’t think you’re ‘allowed to keep it.

Just don’t feed it any greens that have been sprayed with chemicals. My neighbor killed her squirrel and a couple rabbits doing that accidentally. :-(

If you have a good relationship with the dogs’ vet, give them a call. They’ll know.

Based on condition and symptoms, this is head trauma. The squirrel may not be able to feed itself for the next little while, so you best bet is to take it to an animal rescue. Look for one that specializes in wildlife, otherwise they will have no idea what they are doing.

Do not handle it unless necessary, adults can bite clean through your fingers (usually won’t with head trauma, but take necessary precautions). You can leave it in a box or cage, with the towel and a bowl of water, some squirrel seed mix, and granola bars. No milk though haha.

They can almost always recover from this, but it might take up to a couple weeks so best to find a professional.. if you can’t I will hit up my GF for advice, she has rehabilitated many squirrels like this one (common injury) and can give you some advice.

My wife found a baby chipmunk last year. We looked up what to do and it said feed it Pedialite with an eye dropper and put a hot-water bottle in the cage so it stays warm. We ended up finding a wildlife rehab lady to leave it with.

Yeah my wife put some hot water under some towels and it crawled right on top of it to warm up. She gave it water with one of those. She also gave it some soft corn and little tiny pieces of soft granola. It just now woke up and is moving more than ever

Here is a reply from my wife as I hand the tablet over...…..

KMR kitten formula found at any pet store. Mix it as it says on container, mix in some pedilyte for the first couple feeds. Once you make formula store in fridge only pour a little in a bowl and warm up formula. (I use faucet so there is no hot spots). Feed about 3 to 4 cc from a syringe every 4 hours. Make sure he is warm. You can fill a sock with rice and heat it up and he can lay against it. Once up and running around he will not need heating pad just give a blanket or I went and bought a ferret bed and he curled up in that. Add seed to cage, stretching feedings out. Add water in a shallow dish. Start building squirrel house. Place house in tree add seed.introduce him to house and let him play around outside. Then when he stops running back leave him outside. At this point they should be off the formula or down to only a night feeding. Hope this helps.

Those feed intervals are a lot better than i thought. That tip with the hot rice is good. At the moment, we heated some water into a water bottle and wrapped it in a towel. We don’t have anything like that to drink but it has taken some water via a plastic syringe. That’s for the tips sir

Damn, I wish I saw this earlier! I was hanging with my neighbor who actually has TWO squirrels! Pretty much found them the way you found yours. XJ Dano’s advice is great. Follow that.

My neighbor still has his squirrels after he found them about a year ago when they were tiny. They have a cage outdoors that they live in and during the day they run around his yard through the trees and what not. They’re super cool around people and always come back to their cage at night. It’s really something else. Super goofy pets, but fun! haha

Oops, I see now it is a baby. They can still break the skin but are usually quite docile. The main reason I thought it was head trauma, was that adult squirrels won’t sit still long enough to catch them!

XJDano had some good advice, a couple things I would add is to learn what stimulation is and do it before every feeding, it is very important since baby mammals cannot go to the bathroom on their own. Also he is old enough for solid food, so you can still feed him from a syringe but also offer him granola/nut mix in a bowl with some KMR or esbilac added to it.

They are very fun at that age but he will quickly turn into a little terror.

If it’s a baby, you can use kitten formula. Sometimes Walmart carries it, but for sure, a pet store will.

Hey buddy. We gave it Pedialite for a day and the next day she was 100%. Super playful and likes to play with us.

Kinja'd!!!

She actually grew in the last couple dys and is now eating squirrel feed and nuts like a boss! After playing more, she slows down and sleeps. We like her a lot but we will turn her in later at the wildlife section of the Houston SPCA. They’ll hold her for a while then release her in a near by forest
