Very interesting. I wonder which Carthage his Aunt Amee lived in. Missouri is the highest population, but that doesn’t rule out Carthage, TX, MS, TN, or NC. I think we can probably push Carthage, NY down the list - doesn’t sound as likely to have a legendary Aunt Amee and her cooking (regional bias). There’s an interesting note in this article about tours of Greece, so ~1949 is very possible for the letter.

That’s a good question, the book and letter was in Lynchburg Va, but it’s still hard to pinpoint.

1949 is still pretty cool !

It looks like with the post-war activities of Communist forces in Greece, the US decided to send the Navy there to show the flag, and build ties with war-recovering Greece, so that’s one of the most likely times. There’s no mention of active war, which pretty much would ban ‘50-’53 and ~’66 on. Here’s one of the only biplanes I’ve found so far that matches his description, or almost:

If we’re off on the date or he is off slightly on the dimensions, the biplane could also be a Baby Lakes.
