I love the idea of an F1 car that sounds like a C7.R.

Somewhere there is a forum with a bloke trying to get a Honda F1 car going. Apparently the gearbox is the hard part.

I’d actually want a Hartley H1 for something like this. Good luck finding one though...

So we weld two LeCar engines together and then...Nah, an LS sounds fine.

Why not just get this instead, it’ll bolt right in...

Too large

LS might be a touch heavy, but that means more drifty....and you’d probably have the same power and three times the torque...more drifty

That’s what she said :3
Fiiiine...LS9!!!

Is the engine not a stressed member in this?

This is the 2011 Lotus:
This is the 2013 Caterham:

Show car. This thing will never run.

Edited my comment because I mistook it for a Lotus T125 (the production F1 car for billionaires they built a few years ago), instead of an actual F1 car.
That car is a Team Lotus F1 car from 2011, as opposed to the Lotus Renault car you’ve shown above. There were 2 teams using the Lotus name that year, it was a bit of a farce.
So it is the actual 2011 F1 car and body parts coming from Team Lotus with the 2013 livery from the later renamed Caterham F1.
Regardless, the engine is/was indeed a stressed member in both the billionaire playtoy and actual F1 cars so an engine other than a Cosworth F1 engine, wouldn’t work without modification or a skeleton structure to provide a rigid link between the gearbox and tub.

Yeah I got my lotus confused. But you know that the whole LS swap thing is a joke, right?

No, it could be made to run with the Cosworth motor that Cosworth still sells and was originally intended for this car.

Oh yea, I’d love to consider that seriously though. I wonder if someone could build a structure to integrate such an engine in there. I’d take it to Multimatic.

I mean it could be done. I wonder what class it would be in the SCCA rules...
![]() 08/31/2015 at 22:03 |

One of the prepared classes maybe? I bet seeing the cones would be difficult though, haha.

It looks like it’s missing suspension components, so regardless of whether the engine is available, it’s more than just an engine swap. If it’s a “show car” monocoque, it also may not be up to full racing standards. Those two words really worry me, but I don’t have 45k to drop on it anyway.

Can anyone just buy one of those? and I wonder how much they are.

I think that it would be A-Mod

All suspension components look to be there, as well as the transmission (a very hard to find part), the steering, the radiators, etc... The motor that Cosworth sells is not just the motor, it’s the full power unit with Kers, the controls, and full technical support

Hah, I’d like to see the look on the faces of of whoever is running an event if someone brings an open wheel car of any formula.

To me, in that photo, the damper is missing and the pullrod is not the correct one. That gives me pause.

Are we having this conversation people, again!? The consumables on the rest of the car will be either impossible to replace or astronomically priced. If you were a machinist yourself maybe you could replace some parts with cheaper, heavier materials. But I’m not sure how many of them are possible to do that with. The you have tyres, etc... You will probably break the floor at some point haha

Ha - i just posted something on Oppo about this exact same car and without any knowledge of this post whatsoever came to the same conclusion - LS swap. I think that’s a sign that it needs to be done.
