Turned a replica of the old-school BMW shifter. There were a bunch of subtle variations of this basic shape over the years/models, and I went for the chunkier top. Another coat of clear, an emblem, and it’ll be ready to shift!

Looks great! How do you planning on sorting out the shift pattern emblem?

Found one on Ebay - just a 5-speed pattern with an M-color stripe.

That’s beautiful. Put like 10 coats of polyurethane on it and make it feel like glass, OR go really light so you can just baaaaarely feel the grain.

Looks awesome! Go light on the clear if you want to feel the grain.

Thanks! I can’t decide which way to go. I do love a matte/weathered look, but shiny things are shiny!

Well, the upside to starting it shiny is that eventually it’s going to get a really nice broken in patina to it. Can’t go wrong either way, so no matter which way you go, it’s the right choice.

I want 8, yesterday.

I might be making these for other people in the future, but I want to finish this one first, and see how it is.

Did you make that as the weird clip-on type that BMW likes? Or is it screw-on?

It’s a clip-on, and it was a PITA to figure out. I don’t know how the OEM wood shifters do it - I don’t imagine they make the wood itself flex to snap onto the shaft. I ended up 3D-printing a clip to secure at the bottom. It’s not perfect, but it’ll get better in a few iterations.

I don’t know about old OEM ones, but my modern OEM one has a plastic sleeve inside the hole, and the clippy bits are part of the sleeve. Two of the clip tabs on mine snapped off, so I’m using an ugly, cheap aftermarket one off of Amazon. Once you have it down to a science I would be more than willing to commission one if you can find a walnut that matches this:

You have the manual one, right? The auto shifters have that button that makes it more complicated. The one I have currently is a leather-wrapped plastic piece, and the clips are integral to the body, like yours. The old wood shifters might have a separate plastic sleeve inside too. It’s a mystery of science...

Mine is manual, I just don’t have a good picture of it.
I’d love one shaped like this:

Ooh, purdy!
