first day of Kindergarten. Got a message from his teacher saying that the kids are all doing great and no one has cried yet. I guess they don’t count Mrs. Golem.

Anyways the teacher uses class dojo app. It is pretty neat.

Congrats! Today is day #4 for my oldest, he’s going to a half-day program for Kindergarten (accredited...just short). After this interminable summer, the wife immediately asked “Why didn’t we put him in a full-day school?”

Is the Golem in for a full day, or half day?

I ended up full day, since they put me in a super-elite-$10,000-a-year private school (seriously, I went to public school for HS, there is no reason to spend that much on kindergarten)

Full day. I think basically every program is full day now.

Haha I know that feeling. Our eldest starts tomorrow. All the first years in elementary, middle and high schools started today and everyone else tomorrow.

Mine had two days of K last week. Apparently he didn’t like it. Today, when the bus came, he threw down his backpack, hid behind a tree and cried, “I don’t wanna go to school!”

Yup. My wife was a wreck on FDOK. Also, our school used Class Dojo for a while, but they dumped it over security/privacy concerns. But I don’t have any specifics. Now, our 4th grade teacher sends out Tweets but I don’t Twit. We’ve also got a 7th grader, and what drives me crazy is how the paradigm has shifted on information getting to the parents. In the old days, they pinned a note to your kids’ shirt, or sent home memos. Now, they say, “Check my class Website,” which is rarely kept up to date, and that also means that we have to keep track of 6 or 7 teachers. We can also keep track of our MS kid’s grades online, but some of the teachers don’t post grades in a timely manner. Or at all. So, I can appreciate that the Web and social media™ can be a great way for folks to stay in touch, and to simplify things for teachers, but it ends up complicating things for the parents, and the work has to come from both sides of the screen.

Sorry for the rant. Congratulations on kindergarten!

Oh man that’s heart breaking. What do you say to a kid then?

Yeah my daughter’s school uses powerschool and the teachers are horrible at updating it. It has caused my daughter no end of heart burn when momma looks and see all these missing assignments.

My son has missing assignments because he doesn’t turn them in. When I was his age, I learned all about wheedling with the teachers to accept late work and my parents never knew about it. It’s a life skill. Now that the parents can stay on top of it, missing assignments are a major issue in our house. Once it’s late, my son is embarrassed to turn it in. Or so I think. He won’t say why it’s still late, he just gets mad.

I just wrestled him to the ground and forced him on the bus.

Just kidding!!! We walked back home and he was still really upset. I laid him down in his bed with his huggie bear and lambie and he settled down. It turns out that he was pretty upset that his friend from the neighborhood was playing with some other kids in class. He was jealous about that and he felt like none of the kids wanted to be friends with him.

My wife convinced him to go with her to the school a little later. She called ahead and the principal met them out in the parking lot. The principal must have said some things he liked, because he went in voluntarily.

He should be getting off the bus pretty soon. Hopefully he had a better day than last week.
