We’ve had the Peugeot 308, so today we have to have Magnum PI’s favourite, the Ferrari 308.

Three litres (well, actually 2.9 if you’re fussy) and eight cylinders (yes, hence 308), the 308 GTB and GTS replaced the Dino 246 and unlike that car had sufficient cylinders to get a Ferrari badge.

Made for the ten years following 1975 the 308 went through several changes, gaining fuel injection which oddly reduced power: the rest of the world version went from 252 to a not exactly scintillating 215 bhp while the Americans had to put up with just 202. Later extra valves were added giving us the QV badge and a few more horses, essentially going back to the status quo ante and about 240 bhp.

Top trivia: for the first couple of years the 308 had fibreglass bodywork and was about 150 kg lighter than the steel version.

Other trivia: Italy and New Zealand got the 208 instead because those countries penalised cars of over two litres. It wasn’t particularly fast so was later treated to a turbo which still only brought it up to 217 bhp. You can buy two litre diesels with almost as much power nowadays.

Have a normal and an American GTS: spot the differences.

The normal version looks good, the American version looks neutered.

I’ve come to respect the 308 overtime, is it powerful by modern standards? No, but then very few cars are, and the design still holds up in a lot of ways.

Plus this car was the template of my Favorite Ferrari ever.

And at some point during the 1980s somebody in Italy suffered a minor cocaine overdose and stuffed that engine into the first car he came across. And thus the Thema 8.32 was born.

Saw one of those for sale as part of the Baillon collection earlier this year.

Really? I can’t see much different in the photos above. The American one is missing a logo, and maybe has a little more bumper than grill (could be the angle). The hood vents and roof spoiler are black, but that’s it is it not?

Hang on a second. I didn’t know Ferrari had used turbos much, aside from the F40. They really used it to boost the neutered 308 in NZ? How come nobody mentions this?

The American version is pretty much all bumper, no grill. Even if you were to get under the car, the grill basically doesn’t exist. The federal regs going on basically made the bumper take up all the space and didn’t even offer a chance for a grill. Also, notice the awkward jutting bumper in the back, again, federal regs ruining the looks.

Fair enough. I don’t think it’s as bad as some of the Countachs I’ve seen.

Land of the free I guess

God those Countaches suck. Why must the "safety" crowd ruin everything holy and pure in this world? WHY!?

Only happens in America ;) It is absolutely atrocious. It has affected so, so many cars over the years. And for what?

The American one has: bigger bumper, no foglights/flash to pass lights below it, different door mirrors, side marker lights in place of side indicators, combined sidelights/indicators (rather than white sidelights and separate orange indicators) and less power.

The black spoiler and vents are a characteristic of later cars, wherever sold.
