Both front LCAs replaced, no more crunch over speed bumps. Thx for all the well-wishes and advice, & special thx to Clown Shoe Pilot for offering up his tools.

Wrapped it all up just as the clouds are starting to roll in, too!

Here’s a victorious Patriot in its natural environment (but not mine):

I am assuming the ball joints were bad. it makes me angry that modern car you cant just replace the balljoints. or is it just vehicles with aluminum control arms?

No, mine (and many others of recent vintage) have pressed-in ball joints and stamped steel control arms. While you CAN press in new ball joints, the inboard bushings may as well be replaced as well.

However, as is the case with the Jeep Patriot/Compass/Dodge Caliber, the ball joints generally fail at about to 40k miles, which is despicable. I got lucky; mine lasted past 100k.

It’s not that you can’t replace just the ball joints, but for a $20* difference, it’s not really worth the extra work unless you have more time than money. I just did it on my DD 2 weeks ago, if I was in college, I would have gone the ball joint route because it’s a case of beer difference. Now, I have the money for a case of beer and a control arm, so I’ll save myself the extra hour’s worth of frustration.
