"CounterTorqueSteer" (countertorquesteer)

My Saturday is off to a great start. I just spent the morning shooting a WWII military issue Remington Rand 1911. Hawt.

1911 is love. 1911 is life. A war winner.
All praise the mighty JMB.

If I got you a serial number, do you think you'd be able to get me more information on the gun I shot? Unfortunately, I don't know too much about 1911s.

Is that the gun or just stock photo?

A stock photo, but it looked identical to the one in the picture except for an AA proof mark in front of the slide lock.

Sorry, no.
However, I can offer you this... if you can remember if it had any specific markings on it:

Probably a 1911A1 (serial number higher than 700,000)
Elongated beaver tail to protect your hand from the hammer and that little bump on the rear of the grip to help ergonomics. I have a book that covers the gun and the differences from 1911 to A1 to A2 but I'm not home

Hmm. The serial number was just below 600,000.

I don’t know that the 1911 won the war, but other JMB designs probably did. The BAR, 1917 ,1919, and M2 are all significant.
Don’t get me wrong, I love me some 1911. But I don’t think a sidearm can be credited with winning a war.

Awesome, lucky you! Would you recommend this as a first gun for a responsible adult? Or should I just buy a 22? or Kar98... or a mauser... this is after I buy an appropriately sized safe of course.

I would probably wait to get a 1911 until you have developed your skills a bit. 22s are great for learning to shoot. I'd recommend getting a Ruger 22/45. It has the same grip angle as a 1911 and you will save a bunch of money on ammo. Have fun! Be safe!

Thanks, I figured! Hand guns also intimidate me on a level that a nice bolt action does not. I’d definitely do a course. Probably because I’ve never fired one!

Correct.
Although, it was in a war that we won.
I am also blaming kinja too. Grr.

Finding a good instructor who will make you more comfortable is a great first step. It's great to hear that you are being very smart about your decision making.

Great way to relieve stress.
I have this .50 cal Muzzleloader that I need to get out with soon. It was neglected by it’s PO though so there’s about 8 hours of cleaning first. If you really want an experience these are where it’s at!

I’m not saying I don’t really like having a safe, I’m just saying that it’s not a prerequisite for gun ownership, unless you live somewhere that it’s a legal requirement. It’s certainly a good idea to have one.
However, if you don’t have the room for one, or you move around a lot, or you don’t have a few grand to drop on one I certainly wouldn’t let it stop you from becoming a gun owner. I spent my first 19ish years as a gun owner without a safe. As long as you can secure them from children you should be OK. This could mean trigger locks with the keys stored separately. Determined gun thieves are pretty much impossible to protect against so if you make the effort to keep kids safe, I think you’re being responsible.

It was indeed. It was also in one we tied and one we lost :/
Again, not the result of a sidearm.

Or a Ruger P95 tank. Perfect starting gun IMO.

Nah, Revolvers have less moving parts, simpler designs and no magazines

P95 is as basic as it gets for a semi-auto. Semi-auto is where it is at. However, I wont deny a good revolver.

Sounds scary! And fun... again, I would take a course and shoot it with an instructor.

Sounds fair. I forgot that an actual safe costs more than all of the car parts I currently want... thanks for the advice!

That one looks like it’s in great condition. I went out to the desert a few weeks ago to partake, was good fun.

Most of them are a bitch to clean as well. Personally I recommend a revolver as a first hand gun. Probably one in 357 so you can swap between 38 and 357. I carry a 1911 because I like the safeties and the single action trigger pull.

Whoooah ok if it’s hard to clean then I’ll stay away until I can mess with meticulous disassembly. Revolver sounds fun...

Revolvers are super low maintenance, super reliable, most can accept two calibers. Most have a single or double action depending on preference. The 1911 really is a pain, unlike a SIG or Glock which can be disassembled in 3 motions, some 1911s require a special wrench to take the muzzle off. Edit for picture. Note the number of parts.

I’ve always wanted one of these WWII 1911s, the only problem is how expensive they are. The cheapest I’ve seen a Remington Rand being sold for was $1650 but compared to a genuine Colt model, that's chump change. If these all disappear by the time I get some decent income, what do you recommend as a substitute instead?

That sounds fun! But I totally understand now, I bet that’s a pain when everything is covered in gunk. Revolver it is.

If you want something with military heritage, I'd recommend a CZ75b. I have one and LOVE it.
