Back in the late 80’s and early 90’s, American automakers decided that as the European car makers started making it big in America, they should find some way to profit on that success...well, they certainly tried but today it’s up to you to figure out if they succeeded 20 years later...here are three American two seaters with some Euro flair, all under $5K and all from the early 90s...let’s go over the options...

The Reatta was one of those cars that was overly hyped in the media; however, when it comes down to it all it is is a really nice Regal with the sturdy 3800 under hood...is this pristine one with 76K miles being sold by a gearhead (who else wants a chrome bumper Bug, MGB, or Triumph?) worth it for nearly $5K?

If that Reatta hardtop didn’t strike your fancy, how about a convertible Cadillac, body from Pininfarina and flown via 747 to Michigan for final assembly? For only $4K, this nice 52K mile example can be yours!

Similar to the Allante, the TC was developed with Italian help, although did it really result in an improvement? This one has no porthole hardtop, although you can get one off Ebay for !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! This example is relatively nice besides the cracking leather, and with only 73K miles for $4.5K, is it a Nice Price?

Forza Allanté! This is my favorite tidbit from the Wikipedia article:

“The name Allanté was selected by General Motors from a list of 1700 computer generated names.” Wow computers!

Hah! That sounds very old GM... “What should we name it?”—“I have a computer randomizer...how about Allante?”—“Sounds fine.” So much effort into the car, so little effort into the name...

My mom had an Allante in the 90’s it was an electrical nightmare. Rootbeer brown over brown. Good looking car but man that thing was fucked up.

The Reatta, if only for the fact it’s a hardtop and that the V6 in it is unkillable. I like how the T&C looks, but I have a hard time paying good money for it because I don’t know how reliable it is and I also feel the Maserati badge is dishonest. I like the Allante, but the only ones I’m interested in are the 93 Northstar models, which while maintenance headaches are at least powerful, whereas the 4.5 offers only 200 HP and is based off the infamous HT4100 that liked to self-destruct itself often.

Sounds good to me. But what the f*ck is up with that LeBaron text? How did you do that effect?

Oh alliante. Easy peasy. I always thought those were handsome cars. Still do. I like the profile of the Reatta, but to me it’s still a two seat generic Buick.

The TC is a 24 Minutes of LeBaron and those where laughable even back then.

Besides. Go get a 2008 Pontiac Gran Prix LS swap and some mean mufflers for the Caddy. Style and Attitude.

24 Minutes of LeBaron. Priceless. Did you come up with that?

Psst...the first two are basically the same car, only with the option of choosing between the Buick 3.8 and the Cadillac V8. Okay, there’s the droptop, too, but that’s minor. They’re platform-mates.

My dad owned a Reatta for a while; it was a surprisingly nice highway cruiser, all said and done. Not an enthusiast’s car by any means, but we road-tripped that sucker from Alamogordo to Chicago, down to NOLA, and back across Texas, and it was a nice trip the whole way. The touchscreen dashboard (FROM 1989 NO LIE) was actually pretty navigatable (is that a word?) once you understood the basic layouts. I got to the point where I could do whatever I needed on that screen with just a quick glance, and then a non-looking touch...because you had to do EVERYTHING from that screen, save for headlights, blinkers, and wipers. Radio, climate control, etc. But it had a trip computer and a fuel economy reader (FROM 1989 NO LIE), all the crazy stuff we have now, but with Apple IIc level graphics. That 3.8 was pretty much bulletproof, if not slightly gutted by the slushbox. (I guess being front wheel drive meant no chance of using the same box from the GN.)

Leather. Big trunk. REALLY roomy for a two seater. Big, squishy tires. Good ride, all in all, if not REALLY hoonable.

Reatta. The 3800 is bulletproof. And I've always liked them. It'd be a great daily driver.

I kinda knew that since GM = cheap as possible... Anyways, I would expect that it would have been a great highway cruiser with that plush interior and FWD chassis...not that I wouldn’t rather have this first, dated as it may be :)
