Its made of composites like the 787 and it folds up at the tips. They also decided to make it in the U.S. instead of farming it out to Mitsubishi in Japan.

I wrote a thing about it !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , or you could read almost the same thing !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

How long have you been writing for PM? That’s awesome!

Also, I am so excited for the -9x. It will surely replace the -300ER as my favorite airplane.

Totally digging the next stage of the 777 program. What a great airplane it has been for Boeing.

Not too long. They’ve published a few articles for me. Hopefully more soon.

I agree. The 9x is going to be an awesome plane.

I for one welcome our high-performance-sailplane-winged jet transport overlords.

Chris, is it just me or is the sweep of the trailing edge of the new wings much less than the old?

Good point. I hadn’t really compare the two side by side. I wonder if it’s just a simple function of the extra wing length creates less sweep at the trailing edge or if there’s some fancy science involved.

I’d suspect that there is a lot more change in the wing profile over the span than in the aluminum wings. So, yea, fancy science all around. I wonder what the change in the wing does to the transonic behavior of the aircraft.

Also, it might just be a perspective issue. I wasn’t able to find a good comparison planform of the old 777 and the 7x.

Boeing’s ACAPS document has an overlay of the two:

Does look like the wing is a bit less swept, both back and front.

Docs are here:

777x. When I visited Boeing’s big assembly plant at Paine Field, they didn’t even show us the 777x, it was a top-secret project at the time.

They don’t want any of those Airbus guys to get wind of their shenanigans. I would love a tour there. Maybe one day I’ll make it out there.

It’s still under final wind tunnel testing. They’re tooling up for it now, but haven’t started production.
