Help Me Oppo, you’re my only car-themed off-topic resource for asking inane questions about trivialities.
We need to get another TV. Currently we have a 42-inch Sony Google TV, which works rather well despite the lack of support. That is going downstairs to the
dungeon
man-cave, and we want to get a new one for our family-room. Looking at 46-50 inches. Much bigger and it becomes a mural in this room.
Needs: WiFi and Netflix baked in. Preferably a good Netflix app as well.
Don’t need: 3D, 4K, Voice controls, Spy-cams, happy-endings
Budget: ~$800 or so.
Also a good sound-bar would be nice as well; must have optical audio input.

I have last year’s Vizio E-series (their entry level series) 50”. It has a great picture, and somewhat crappy apps. It does a terrible job of keeping a good wifi connection even though every other device I own does a fine job of connecting to my wifi in the same room as the tv is located. It frequently downgrades the quality of the video stream. I use my PS3 for Netflix etc. anyway.

With 800 or so to spend, you’re golden, plenty of options.
My recommendation (and I don’t say this often) go to the store and find the one with the nicest picture. Then go home and buy it online for less. you should be able to get a 1080p smart tv around 50” for 5-600 if you can’t find one let me know. I guarantee a Vizio in that budget, probably even a Samsung.

They make that in a 46-inch size!? How much does that weigh? I don’t think that’s what I’m looking for...

I’m not really interested in Vizio. I read their TVs spy on people, and while I know it’s inevitable, I’d like to try to not welcome that into my house if I can help it.

I’ve had a 47” sony bravia since last January, it’s real nice, it would fit your bill well

We are planning on buying this exact TV if Fry’s super great deal turns out to be untrue (it probably will).

My only real complaint is that the remote feels a little cheap and the controls aren’t exactly intuitive

Don’t really want a Vizio product. Read the other replies for the why.

Probably can’t be worse than the Google TV we have already.

That sounds like some conspiracy stuff.
Either way, I highly recommend Sharp. I’ve been using my 37” Sharp since 2008 and I had someone over just a month ago that went “Wow, this thing has great picture”
I also don’t do smart TV’s. I have smart devices hooked up anyhow, I don’t need another layer of some half assed software when I can use my own.

Interesting, but apparently, they aren’t the only ones doing it. You can also turn it off.

Yeah we had one of those in our break room at work and no it is not worse than that.
though I gotta say a keyboard would be handy from time to time. My girlfriend has an M class Vizio (sp?) and it has a really sweet remote that has a keyboard on the back which works really well

True, but when does a software “off” just become a meaningless pacification? Call me paranoid, but I would prefer that ability not even present so I know it never works at all.

Sharp stopped making TVs last year or so. :/
We need a smart TV as this will not have any gaming consoles or other connected peripherals hooked up. We have a Bluray player that could get online, but I won’t plug it in so it can’t phone home and check our discs. Not that I have any pirated dics, but I prefer that it just play my movies without checking with Big Brother for an okay first.

Being a Sony TV, I could probably just buy another of those remotes and pair it to the new one easily enough.

Their Privacy Policy says that off is off. So if off is on, then you could make some decent money with a lawsuit.

yeah I’m sure you can. The remote for my surround sound receiver actually works for the tv’s basic functions without even programming it. Of course getting the smart functions to work with a cheap universal remote may be more of a challenge

Linebacker just had an article about this .
IMHO get the largest, nicest, most-port-equipped Sharp Aquos you can.
Otherwise, get a Vizio, TCL, or perhaps a Samsung.
