Looks like we’ll be changing our car insurance from State Farm to Nationwide. Right now, we have two vehicles, with three drivers, all liability state miniums, and paying around $130 a month. It’s for our 2000 Infiniti I30 and 2002 Dodge Durango. We got a quote from Nationwide, and we’re going to end up switching. Going from liability to full coverage is going to end up being $23 LESS per month. Money saved!* State Farm has just been terrible with us. Not taking out scheduled payments, not adjusting policies when they’re supposed to, terrible customer service, terrible local agents, and Nationwide just seems like a much better deal. Who here deals with Nationwide? Good experience? Bad? I had Progressive for years and they were alright, but just not that great overall.

*Money saved is money that will undoubtedly be spent on something else.

With car insurance it’s been my experience that shopping around every few years is good. Loyalty doesn’t seem to make much difference so we just take a look and go with what we can get the best deal on. We switched to Esurance this past spring and are paying ~$300 every 6 months for full coverage on two vehicles. That’s down from about $475 at Allstate for the same coverage levels. The funny thing is that Allstate owns Esurance.

My first car was $240/month for just myself.

To this day I’m still convinced that Geico fucked up their pricing for me. I mean, they probably didn’t, but I can’t explain the rate I’m getting otherwise.

$100,000 per person/ $300,000 per incident injury liability

$50,000 property liability

$100,000 for uninjured motorosit liability

$250 comprehensive deductible

$500 collision deductible

$30/day rental reimbursement

Basic Personal Injury protection (no deductible)

$74 a month

Whatever demon deal I unwittingly made, I am not complaining. I’ve quoted other insurance companies and they all seem to be about 50$ a month more expensive than Geico. And I don’t think Geico is that much cheaper than their competition.

Check out Esurance. For my wife and I, full coverage on two cars:

250k/500k Bodily Injury

100k Property Damage

5k Medical Payments

100k/300k Uninsured Motorist

250k/500k Underinsured Motorist

500/500 Deductibles

$298/6 Months or $49.66/mo

Even just matching my coverage is an extra 6 dollars a month on esurance. That’s the closest I’ve seen any other company get, but it’s still more expensive than Geico.

B’More-ish. All three are paid off, and only one still has collision and comprehensive.

I’m about to do the same. I think I’m going to call USAA tonight and see what they can do for me. My wife uses them and loves them. Yes, I know, we should be on the same insurance, we’ve been married 2 years already, but meh, w/e., she still hasn’t switched last names yet. But even when I was active duty, they couldn’t touch State Farms rates. But State Farm’s customer service has been so awful, I think it’s time for a change.

As I school teacher I was with Horace Mann for years because my local agent was awesome and while the rate wasn’t the lowest it was competitive enough with awesome customer service I wasn’t motivated to leave. My agent left the company so I agency shopped and I ended up with Liberty Mutual again due to a good local agent and a competitive quote.
